I received and am trying to digest some photos and information on John Powell’s khukuri collection. I translated a few of the photos into jpegs and put them into the FAQ. More photos and information will follow as I figure out the data John sent.

There are some data files (in Quark Express) that I haven't figured out how to read yet. And the whole thing was put together on a Mac, so there are some translation challenges for me. Stay tuned.

WOW! There are some truly amazing khukuris in John's collection. Hope you are able to decipher the accompanying text. That will be a super reference to print and keep.

Khukuri FAQ

These are quite impressive. Some of the older ones really remind me of the Ganga Ram Special pix we have seen. I am also interested in the detail on the decorated kothimoda scabbards.

Howard, you are a gentleman and a scholar among FAQ maintainers. My only request is that in your change log, you include links to each new change, so we don't have to go hunting through the whole thing to see where you put the Many Names of Uncle Bill, for instance.

"Oh, a magic khukuri. Why didn't you say so?"

John Powell is scheduled to arrive in Reno today at about 3:30PM. He is bringing a couple of khukuris from his collection to show to Pala and we hope for some kind of Id or provenance. But, we'll see.

I have commented on Howard's great work both in personal email to him and on the forum and I'll do it again. If anybody is wondering about motivation I will guess that Howard's journey to Nepal some 20 years ago has much to do with it.

Right or wrong, Howard?

Jeff, I'll try to leave better clues. Of course I know where I put it. (In the logical location, of course!

Khukuri FAQ

Here I was about to profer praise and gratitude to Howard for doing this, but it seems Howard is already quite full of it. Maybe we could send him along on Jeff Randall's next expedition to get his head shrunk.

And John Powell, thank you, even if you do respond to my terrible jokes by sending back even worse ones.

Seriously, Howard is owed thanks by us all. When I started reading the HI forum in March of 99 over on KnifeForums, it took me a week and more to read all the threads, and the HI forum over here hadn't even started. Now there is probably twice the daily traffic.

Since opening HI on Bladeforums, there have been 8,974 + posts in 677 + topics/threads. Add in 459 topics/threads from KF ( # of KF
posts I'm unsure of ) and you have an HI forum total # of topics so far of 1136 so far.

Bunch of good info, but takes too long to wade through it. Thanks to Howard's FAQ's, we only need to do that when we want to.

I never dreamed this forum would attract so many visitors and so many posts. I get email from people who have visited for months and never made a post. Lurkers are they called?
So, there are those who visit that we never know about, including a great number of Bando people. Welcome, all!

Great people make a great forum.

Aaron,

Thank you for your generous offer. I may take you up on it. I don't have the disk right now though. One of my friends with a Mac, but without Quark Express, is tackling some of it. I hope to get the disk back Friday and see what remains to be done.

Khukuri FAQ

John Powell has come and gone and he impressed me not only with his love of fine khukuris but the knowledge he has acquired about them and the Gorkhas. He was able to teach me a few things for which I thank him.
It is not easy to teach an old dog new tricks.

An officer and gentleman who exemplifies what a naval aviator should be.

Khukuri FAQ

Yvsa, you just made me remember I didn't take pix of the khukuris John brought with him! What a nut I am.

He had a couple of very old khukuris. One Pala thought was 500 years old. Both John and I don't think it is that old but you really can't be sure. There is the possibility. It was in great condition for such an old blade. John will send some pix back to Nepal for the kamis to view. They are actually better than anybody in judging age of khukuris and can sometimes tell where they were made. Better than Pala, me, John or anybody for that matter.

John also had an old kothimora in good condition but the tip or chape was missing. Bura will make a new chape for it in matching silver and design.
