The joys of a smaller knife collection...

Well, since I have given away/sold off quite a few pieces, I've realized one thing. You learn to appreciate what you DO have. The only folder I currently use is my Spyderco Calypso Jr and I rediscovered its great egros and thin blade profile.

amen to that. i've sold and given away lots of my non-users also, and ended up with a few knives that i really like. it really makes you more aware of the usefulness of the knives you still DO have. very true.

Count me in that group also. I've pared down the collection to only those few knives I will actually carry and use. I am really tired of buying a knife just for the sake of buying a knife! With fewer blades you do learn to appreciate what you have.

I haven't been able to get rid of everything I don't use regularly, but I have gotten rid of everything I don't anticipate using at least occasionally. (The only exceptions are a few gift knives that have sentimental value.) I seem to hover at around two-dozen folders and two-dozen fixed blades. That's obviously more than even I want to fit in my pockets at once... ;) ...but it gives me a wide selection of small-to-large and woodcraft-to-tactical-to-formal.

My collection has never been huge, but I estimate that I've sold or given away (mostlly the later) at least twice as many knives as I now own. Not only does this arrangement give me a greater appreciation for the knives I just can't let go of, it also means that most of my friends now carry a quality blade too. I'm not sure which gives me more satisfaction.

I didn't get rid of ALL, I just stopped buying and keeping for the sake of having a buncha knives. My KFF Pro and M16 are still here since I WILL have the real one one day!

Well, at around 80 or so customs, it's not nearly as big a collection as I'd like it to be, so, I have no trouble appreciating them all, my 80 children... :)

I also have a small collection. I have decided to sell off the ones I dont use, and buy what I really like, which are Busses and Swamp Rats. Also, with less money to spend, I find myself doing alot of research before I buy a knife, so I usually end up with exactly what I want.

I'm down to a small fraction of what I used to have. I'm only interested in the ones I will actually use, or those with designs and execution that really appeal to me.

This thread is very educational. It probably won't make the 2004 knife magazines or manufacturers ...."favorite" thread.

But this is an upcoming trend. In almost all collectibles.

But ya may have to buy a lot before you find the ones that you really like. My magic final tally is 6.

What brought this up and the selling was when I reread my confiscation thread. Someone had stated that I didn't have my collection confiscated because I had two knives left. (Couldn't use them) Realized that I wasn't appreciating each knife as much as I was when I only had a few.

I have pretty much given up buying new knives of any type. No more customs or new production knives. I have plenty. However, I have really gotten in to collecting old vintage folders and even old (1800s and early 1900) straight razors.

I'm with Dr. Thor in that I am backing down on spending so much and some beforehand research is indeed needed so that I'll KNOW that this is a knife I will carry. Btw, I am already looking at the next MEGA folder, the Retribution, designed by Jerry Hossom and built by Ontario. S30V blade, .100" thick Titanium liners, and shaped micarta grips. Will probably preview at SHOT and be ready for sale March/April.

....better not turn to page 102 of the March issue of Blade. Ohhhh...myyy. Delicate, pretty, ATS34, file-worked, mirror finish, mosaic pinned cocobolo, brass hilt, RC58-59, hand tooled leather sheath.........ohhhhh need I go on?

Oh yeh....the price.... a full $100.00

WHO can afford stuff like that?

nuff said. He said mine wouldn't be ready for 3-4 months.

dang.
