Hey all,

I was just wondering if I could get some information on this knife. When I saw it sitting in the pawn shop today I had to have it because of the condition and the fact that it was a Ka-BAR. It is in excellent shape with no cracks in the handle material and the blade with a quick cleaning would be like a mirror. Thanks ahead of time for the information. The marks are KA-BAR with the words reg. us. pat. off. and on the reverse side it says Union Cutlery Co and Olean N.Y. I ..loved the handle anyone know what that is made of?

I have one very similar to that one and from what I have been told {dangerous data sometimes :) }, handle composition and blade shape is a 1930s product. Maybe toooj will stop by and tell us when exactly he made it. :D

Thanks for the info. Having grown up just a few miles from the KA-BAR factory I have collected these knives since I was a kid. Was more than happy to get this out of a pawn shop where somebody who would not appreciate the blade might have bought it :P

Your knife is a model G72, listed in KA-BAR OUTDOOR KNIVES catalog#38 from the late 1930s, possibly from 1938. It is listed as having a "beautiful unbreakable handle with patented finger grips to prevent slipping when wet". The handle material is celluloid. It's a cool knife. There are also similar ones marked "OLCUT".

Thanks gunsil, Looks like I got more than my monies worth on the buy. Since it says unbreakable handle.. it is going out in the woods tomorrow on its first bushcraft trip. I actually like the feel of the knife in my hand much more than my SPYDERCO bushcraft.

I paid more for mine. :o

Union's version of the "Woodcraft," but I prefer it to Marble's original due to a thinner, better cutting blade.

The handle on mine is a darker brown mixed with the gold. Amazing that the handles have held up so well given what can happen with celluloid. I wonder if Union Cutlery did something special with theirs.

Fantastic score. Love that celluloid handle.

nice knife, anything with kabar stamped on it in a pawn shop around here is priced more then the cost when new,i dont know what happened to haggling at pawn shops, they wont lower their price,so its go on down the road and order it,or pay up,guess what I do. I have quite a few kabars lol .oh well. the only deal I got was on a kabar cutlass.

Just remember, I don't think that unbreakable handle and unbreakable tang are intended to mean the same thing ;)
