After much research and chats with fellow makers I’ve finally started dying my own jigged bone. This here is my first crack at it. So far I’m very please. Will need to continue experimenting with mix ratios for future colors I’d like to produce. Shout out to the man Mr Ken Coats

This is a medium backpocket WIP with A2 steel. Length is 3-7/8 closed.

I think it came out very well! Will be exciting to see how the technique evolves as you continue using this process more!!

The process that Ken laid out was really easy to follow. I used xylene as my pre-soak. Some say gasoline works really well too. I skipped the boiling process because my bone was already bleached and cleaned.

The hot plate with the dye container was amazing. I had really good saturation overnight. I left it in the drink a little extra though.

Looking forward to seeing if I can get an amber bone color at some point. I think Ken Erickson had technique somewhere. Just wish I had the color ratios to get me started.

Nice work. Can be a very difficult process, but your first attempt looks brilliant. 👌
Thank you. Was glad to have some good resources.

Does anyone have a mix ratio for Fieblings leather dye for amber bone? For the life of me I can’t find the article Ken Erickson did.

Not an article, but here kc custom kc custom talks about the color he uses to get the Amber:

Here ken erickson ken erickson talks of the 2 colors he mixes to get the Amber color, but no ratio:

Last is the Fiebings coloring mix video and the color mix books between 5 & 6 minutes into the video (displayed at the bottom of the video).

Hope this can at least give you some kind of clue where to start.

Heck yeah. I’ll check those video out and the link. I’m sure I’ve seen the links before but it’s a pain to find them sometimes. I need to bookmark them. Thank you

The easiest way to find all their YouTube videos at once, is go to the Fiebings at .com home page and scroll to the bottom of the page, there you see the YouTube link that brings you to all of theirs that are posted.

Super easy to find all together that way 👍
