So this morning I want out to take care of a wounded chicken, and I thought I'd share.

It sure was a cold morning!

But the dog didn't mind.....

The tool for the day....

It was cold, so first I worked on a little fire....

With the help of Cave Runs finest fatwood, and MI's superb Birch bark:

After a little plucking I soon discovered that this little hen was no meat market...

A quick skewer:

And some spice:

And a little cooking (this pic doesn't show the finished result, yes, I cooked it more.)

After I tasted it I had a great idea of what to do with it:

:D

I hated to waste it, but it was awful! I cooked it poorly and the hen was quite tough as it was. I think my dandelions earlier this year were better... :(:D

Oh well, the trip wasn't a total loss, I did end up making some Bannock and tea.... (sorry, no pics)

Hey, a trip out is a trip out! It's better than being stuck in an office. :D

If you try it again, you may want to try making a grill of sorts with some green sticks or a green fork you could lay it across.

Good idea! I used to pack around a 24" X 12'' piece of 1" X 1/2" wire that we used for rabbit cages, but green sticks would be a lot cooler, and a better project. I should try bringing something to marinade it in next time....

Very cool! I do love the ky fall :-) I butchered up a rooster that was injured awhile ago. The meat was tasty, but really tough. Next time, maybe try to make a fire, bring a cast iron Dutch oven, cube all the meat real small, and make a nice slow cooked chicken soup or stew :-) then the meat will be tender and delicious!
I cant wait to start raising my own chickens! I want to raise Jersey Giants :)

Cool pics MM.
I've only been to Kentucky once, but it I liked it a lot.
Some beautiful country you've got there.

I could stand to get out in the woods.

Nice pictures MM:thumbup:

Yep, next rabbit I get I'll try stew, or maybe a couple squirrels. I'm unfamiliar with jersey Giants, but they sound like good meat birds. Are they good layers?

Thanks! We love it here, I may never move....

Thanks! I hate the prospect of having to get a job and all; I love the free time. But I suppose I go to school 50 hours a week, and I still have time, so I guess that it won't be so bad. Plus, I'll get paid for working. :D;)

Hey MM.....

Good to see you taking us along on your adventures again....... Thank you.....
