It was not that long ago that I made a comment that I did not have a Buck stockman in my meager, but growing collection. I admire the down to business looks and ruggedness of the Buck. But, alas I didn't have one. Well, shortly after that post, I received a message from a fellow porch dweller. I'm sure most of you already know Clay. Yes, I received a message from Clay. We talked about the knives that he loves - Bucks. Well, to my complete astonishment, Clay has sent me a Buck 301 stockman. One of his favorite knives! I am honored and humbled at the same time! This simple act meant so much more to me than he could know. Here is a picture of the Buck...

Thank you, again Clay! This buck will ride with me the rest of the week and become a welcome member of my collection. Clay, although we have never met in person, I consider you a dear friend.

John

Congrats, John! I've always liked the sawcut handles on the Bucks. Well done, Clay!

The quality of character that is shown here in the traditional forum on a day to day basis is really incredible... It truly is a special place with special people. I'm glad I get to hang out here!

I too am a recipient of Clay's generosity. He's a real stand up guy and I also consider him a friend.

Nice knife, John and slick move, Clay!

John, not only a wonderful knife and gift but Clay sent an older classic harder to find one!!! I love the older ones with full flat ground blades...an American classic:cool: Your a great member here on the Porch and a very deserving one as well:thumbup:

Clay, such a WONDERFUL gift, very kind of you and KARMA your way my friend:thumbup:

Congrats to you on the Buck stockman and kudos to Clay for the wonderfully generous gift.

I've been the recipient of a number of such wonderful gifts and they've become special knives indeed. In fact I carried the gabon ebony #33 Conductor again today that was a gift a couple years ago. I love this little 33 :D

John that is a nice 301! They are great knives and I know you will enjoy it. Clay is a classy guy. If I know this place like I think I do, someone will repay his kindness! That's just what we do! ;)

Very nice knife! It's that very model that I hope to one day acquire, I'm sure a couple folks have read my mention of losing my grandfather's buck in a house fire. It was this exact model, black sawn covers and sheepfoot on the end opposite the clip. Just that picture brings back old, good memories of it in his gnarled hands. Sharpening a pencil in the shop, or being used to strike a line. Congratulations Netguy! Well done Clay, well done. Does anyone know what years those date from? And possibly who was making them for Buck? It would help me in my future search, if anyone had/has that information. I don't mean to gush, but...that is a special model to me.
Thanks, Neal

I only hope I can match his kindness.

I thank you all for the kind words. Truely though I deserve no credit, all that belongs to John who in his kindness to a newbie member made me feel like a welcome friend. And besides how is he going to call himself a knife collector and not have a Buck stockman in his collection? 😜
John thank you for being you!

+1.

Good on you Clay for making the Porch an even better place.

John--that full flat grind is a special variation and a real looker, they grind them concave now.

Well done, Gents.

If I'm reading the date code on the tang correctly, that's a 1995. Made by Buck. The older Camillus ones are in the traditional Stockman configuration with the clip/sheepfoot opposite the spey. You can search in the Buck sub-forum, I'm sure there are at least a few threads that list the different versions of 301/303.

Thanks, R8shell, I was thinking I needed to do the same. My stumbling block, as I said was/is the sheepfoot opposite the clip. I know the size was the largest available. Even as an older man walking with two canes, my grandfather topped out at 6'4", and could palm a basketball. The hunt will be interesting:D.
Thanks, Neal

Hey! I just read the related thread! ;) Accolades to both John and Clay for their generous thoughtfulness!:thumbup:
