I grew up at a time when many still believed that ‘children should be seen and not heard’, and where asking a question in class, or heaven forbid, speaking, would earn you a beating from the individual invested with your care and education  I got beaten a lot by my teachers for speaking in class, but I can’t say it stopped me, and one day I was too big for them to beat ;)

I have had a varied professional career, starting out as a 16 year-old apprentice motor-mechanic (and a paper-boy for the five years before that), but I’ve been lucky enough to be able to make my living, for most of my life, from my words, either written or spoken.

I not only share a friendship with Alan Shearer, but also an affliction, since we both have upstarts borrowing our names! :grumpy: Personally, I think Alan got the better end of the deal, since virtually nobody outside Newcastle (England), and a couple of other places, has heard of the OTHER Alan Shearer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Shearer) ;)

Alan and I have exchanged quite a few PMs on the forum, and having been recently bowled over by the recent run of GEC #13s, he very kindly offered to send me one. The #13 I liked the look of best was the Speaker Jack, which Alan thought quite appropriate, and I received a package from him yesterday, with this beautiful example (yet to be properly photographed). I’m very impressed by the build quality, GEC did a great job, and I look forward to slipping this elegant knife into my waistcoat pocket before a speaking engagement, or just into my pocket, which I did as soon as Alan’s parcel arrived.

Thanks for your kindness Alan, it’s very greatly appreciated :)

Ha Ha! Nice one Jack. :D Being a Football fanatic I was instantly amused by Alan's name but knowing that Americans don't follow Football, or what they erroneously call 'soccer'...;) I didn't want to point it out .

As the Ingaland and Newcastle fans used to chant, "Alan Shearer, Alan Shearer! There's only one Alan Shearer!" Seems they got that one wrong though:eek:

My dream is to see Alan Shearer as England manager some day...but that may be far off! I once came across somebody called George Best, but he had neither the charisma nor drink problem of the late Man U & N.Ireland star..:D Then there was the great Brazilian football player Socrates, but wasn't he some Ancient Greek dude too?? Then there's this Shakespeare managing Leicester City, didn't he write plays though???

I got the Clerk in that series, being a Pen type more than a Jack , and I'm impressed by the snap and build quality there. Kind of thought about a Blackwood Clerk but missed out and got the Muslin Micarta instead. Tidy series of knives these, and a fine present from a Gent on the Forum.

Thanks, Will

LOL! Great post Will! :D

Thank you for your kind words Jack:thumbup: It is true that not so many folks know who Alan Shearer (in football) is, but I did get a free bottle of Prosecco in Rome years ago. When I presented my credit card to the waiter, suddenly all the staff came out on the sidewalk to meet "Alan Shearer". The owner, carrying a bottle of sparkling wine for my wife and I. The look on his face:D

Jack: You and as I have said, many others on this forum, but you in particular are a big part of the soul of this place. I felt that you do so much for others. I wanted to do something unprompted for you.

Cheers my friend.

"My dream is to see Alan Shearer as England manager some day.." Really? :p

Great post my friend. I for one, properly call it football, not soccer

Awesome stuff here, Jack- you would have to be one of THE most deserving people here to receive a gift, I like that Jack- a nice knife for sure of exceptional Quality! Well done Alan for looking after Jack!

Much appreciated Alan, and of course no offence to your American Football either :D You might do a good job and it's millions of Pounds Sterling a year to little effect even if you're caught taking bribes :D:D

Good laugh that about the free wine in Italy! They of course have formidable National Team, more impressive than the Germans in my view. Except that they should not have won the World Cup last time....the greatest player of recent time Zidane, was caught out by them  That said, the Serie A is always engrossing, FORZA ROMA!

When you think about Football, the Hooligan element is always lurking..first from England, then in to Holland, Germany, Poland and lately Russia. I wonder if GEC had decided to name the 13 (unlucky) after Football violence (Instead of the Congress frame theme) then you'd have, The Thug, The Lout, The Beer Monster and The Home & Away.....

That's where I know the name Alan Shearer from! I don't know anything about football, but Alan Shearer sounded familiar. Now that you've jogged my memory, I remember hearing his name in the soccer flick Goal! with Zidane and Beckham.

Great story.

Very funny post Will. The millions of Pounds got me thinkin! I'm somewhat of a rare American male, in that I really don't like American Football at all. I think it's brutal. And that's enough about that. Don't want to get kicked off the Forum:) My son who's business has an office in London is a rabid Chelsea fan too.

So, knives have to have informal names it seems. I like your idea of naming a GEC series after football hooliganism! Makes sense to me.

Thank you Duncan: I thought the Ebony Speaker Jack was the perfect knife for Jack Black, the occasional speaker!

No relation to the short, round comedian of course::)

Jack and Alan, good on you both and by that I mean for your presence here on the forum, your kindness and your contribututions:cool::thumbup: good karma for you both.

Now what's this football you speak of:D

No relation to the short, round comedian of course::)

Of course not. How could anyone confuse that guy with our beloved Jack? There's only one genuine Jack Black.

How long have you had your own line of men's beauty products Jack?

:p

You almost fooled me with Alan Shearer, lol :D
Great example of #13, the best of the 13 line.
Great knife, great gesture.

Mike

Jack, thanks for sharing with us the story of Alan's generosity! Very desirable knife!:thumbup:
Alan, what a kind and thoughtful gift to a most deserving recipient! Accolades, kudos, and plaudits to you!:D
The two of you brought some warm sunshine to an otherwise cool and rainy day!

Thanks for the kind words GT (Gary, right) I'm still learning real names? In order to preserve knife content here's a photo of the other Ebony Speaker I have. I have trouble deciding if the Speaker or the Clerk are the best of the 13's. But, they're both great knives.

Very nice gesture
That is a very gorgeous knife.
I love reading these stories here all the time. Specially in the traditional section.

I agree with the other fellas, very kind gesture. And what a beautiful knife! Love that gabon ebony. I picked up a whip from the exchange in gabon ebony and it hasn't left my pocket since.
