The kitchen knives: what's the manufacturing status?

I want to get a K12p and on the company site it says the knife is out of stock, yet at knifecenter it says it's discontinued. Most of the kitchen knives are that way. There's two things I'm wondering, since I'm in the market and willing to pay:

1)What is it? Will the knives be made again or are the truly discontinued? I kinda need that knife or I'm buying a Kai/Global if it can't be found.

2)Who has the super secret link to the site that has all the Spyderco models of old in stock. Send it to me in PM, don't link it here and scalpers will find that and gut the place. Many moons ago someone helped me find a Schempp Roc in H-1 there. They might have the K12p too.

Thanks.

Hi legs,

Spyderco is no longer making them. You might be able to find some in stock at some dealer?

That's what I didn't want to hear. Thanks. Can you shed some light why you're not anymore? There were tons of options and made out of good steels and had stylish handles. Maybe Kai hired the Yakuza to muscle out G-Sakai lol.

It is gorgeous. I would guess it’s hard to compete with the flooded market.

Yeah I want it so bad. I would get a whole set if I had the money but sadly I only replaced my most used kitchen knife, and I got a K11 to match my Wustoff carver's knife. I use it every day, think it's gorgeous, and it performs exceedingly keeping a sharp and not bent or chipped edge for a long time.

Market is weird atm. Spyderco makes very good stuff. I hope they can weather this storm and prosper.

I think I'll make a thread about that. They should hold tight and not be radical in this time because people don't have the money to get fancy stuff, the younger generation only cars about their phone and not tools, and the majority of the knife market already to WE/Civivi or Saftey Razor folders bought at a hardware store.

Hi Legs,

It's a new maker in Seki that we were trying out. He couldn't deliver consistently so we had to drop the model. I undrstand that he was finishing up some that he had on hand that needed to be fixed. I'll see if I can find out the status.

Wow, thanks Sal! The octagon handles and these KPs are seriously beautiful knives, it's a shame I couldn't pick up more when I came around to the money, but sorry to hear about that didn't working out.

Spyderco has struggled to complete in the kitchen knife market for years. Recently they partnered with Murray Carter who is a great blade maker to release a line of knives that are intended to compete in the industry but they fall short especially for the price. If you really want a kitchen knife I would suggest that you call Jon at Japanese Knife Imports and chat about what you are looking for as there are so many better options out there.

Alas, I too abandoned my search for Spyderco kitchen knives and settled for a Tojiro DP Gyoto, Petty, and Nakiri.

At least they're in VG-10 so there is *some* commonality involved.

And when my friends got snippy and asked sarcastically why they are not Spyderco's, I repled - Oh, "Tojiro" is Japanese for "Spyderco".

Hey, MyLegsAreOk:
Just a heads up... I sent you a private message. Could you take a look when you have a chance?

Thanks much!
Kristi

I'm looking hard at some ZDP-189 chef knives which are made in Japan. I love my ZDP-189 Endura very much.
