I put in the request at my lady's last prenatal appointment if it would be ok if I cut the cord with a knife that I would supply. After checking with the sterilization department the midwife said it would be fine as long as it was all stainless steel and sharp enough to cut through the tough material of the cord. I told her that wouldn't be a problem and I'd get a suitable knife to her ASAP. Given the requirements, I went for a Buck PakLite Caper and pimped it out a little. Sorry for the crappy pics--it was night and I had to get the knife to the hospital the next morning on my way in to work. :o

Your eyes do not deceive you! I converted it from a hollow grind to a full flat zero grind! Entirely by hand in two evenings. Polished and stropped that thing was zipping hair off my arm without touching the skin just like my straight razors do.

I left very thorough safety and handling instructions for the staff, so we'll hope they don't kill themselves with it. :D

Haha, real knife lover right here!! :D
Great stuff!

Congratulations and I hope your kid will become an avid knifefan just like his dad.

Take care ;)

Congratulations on the upcoming offspring! I wish you both a successful delivery and healthy child. That knife is a pretty good way to start your child's life, I would say.

I hope you explained that unlike the scalpels that they are used to this thing is actually SHARP! :D

I did everything but wrap it with caution tape. :D I DID put some scotch tape over the edge with little pull tabs at either end for easy removal, however. :)

Congrats!

Thats really cool......kinda mad, but very cool.

Beware (as I am sure you have already been told) the cord is tough!

Enjoy it while you can. Won't be much time for such things once the little one has arrived!

Congratulations on the child.

To be truthful, I don't remember what I cut my son's cord with 20+ years ago. Chances are, 20 years from now, you'll not remember either. Too many more important things to remember. First steps. First words. Congrats.

Congrats on the new child! You aren't gonna name him Buck by any chance are ya?:D Assuming it's a boy of course.

What you're doing seems kind of strange...

but I understand cause I'm a fellow knife knut as well :). Congrats on the new family member!

I'm kind of disappointed you're not using a machete. I guess the stainless requirement ruled that out.

Congratulations.

Do you know what their reasons are why it has to be stainless steel?

I'm kind of disappointed you're not using a machete. I guess the stainless requirement ruled that out.

Because it has to be autoclaved and they didn't want any chance of rust. A machete would have been sweet, but I figured something small and non-scary that they could actually sterilize properly would be best.

His name will be Martin, by the way.

LOL, this takes me back a year. My wife laid it out for me that I COULD NOT cut the cord with anything other than what the Doc handed me. I figured she was going through enough with being pregnant, so I didn't push her on it.

My daughter will be turning one on Friday, when is Martin due? Being a Dad is awsome! It has cut down on my free time, totaly worth it though!

Enjoy every second, it passes way too fast!
