The Knife Show/Cutlery Corner

Am I the only one who watches '"The Knife Show" on Direct TV? They never show anything worth buying, but for some strange reason I find the 46 knives for $130 offers and the 5' 10" swords fascinating....

It's a train wreck with 100 boxcars full of junk,but i watch it sometimes too.The traditional patterns are tempting sometimes i admit.SMKW's knives Live is better.Ive ordered a few from them.

I don't watch Cutlery Corner because I'm not willing to buy anything they have to offer. Tactical Knives magazine conducted a test of the kinds of knives they sell. You can see the results in the September, 2008 issue beginning on page 38.

I do watch Knives Live (SMKW). Every once in awhile, you can pick up a real bargain from them. I bought an A.G. Russell Folding Hunter in 154CM from them for $39.95. The knife was flawless when it arrived and it's my current EDC. I also bought a Kershaw Outcast for $39.95. It came with the complete factory packaging and it wasn't a second or a blem.

I have a trick I use for watching SMKW. I've got a Dish Dual DVR and I record SMKW on Channel 2 while I watch other programming on Channel 1. Then whenever a commercial runs on Channel 1, I switch to the DVR and fast forward through the offerings from the previous commercial. That way I'm never more than 10 to 15 minutes away from an offering that may be of interest to me. I've been cherry-picking them that way for a long time.

One issue I have with shows like Cutlery Corner and especially Knives Live is the way the hosts butcher the English language. Certain words end up having too many syllables and others not enough. For example, a word like "Schrade" is pronounced with two syllables instead of one and ends up sounding like the title of a famous movie starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Other words like "Kanetsune" and "Abalone" are pronounced with only three syllables instead of four. And more than one knifemaker has suffered the indignity of having his name completely mispronounced. Bob Terzuola's last name, for example, is pronounced terra-ZOO-la on Knives Live. A person can only take so much . . .
