Its 1:45am ish central, and my brain maybe fried, but I was thinking about rotation etc, how and what we choose each day.

Obviously collector/safe queens don't apply here.

My question is if y'all frequently overlook certain knives in your collection, and what is the reason?

For me, I have a small collection of folders, 25 maybe. But lately I've decided to try and carry or at least give attention to some of the neglected ones. After inspecting each, I've determined why. Mostly.

Brous Bionic. Could have been great. I've modified (total hack job but whatever) it by "fixing" issues that should have been addressed by the factory. Filed down the flipper tab do it doesn't hurt, filed down the jimping and pointy rear.

It flips great, good ergos for it's size, but I hate the clip. Even with loctite the screw won't stay. Finally super glued it. Despite that I like it better, it's ugly and beat up (I used it a lot back when I got it.

Gonna carry it today.

Next:

Three Sisters Forge Beast. Despite being super smooth, it has a lot going against it. Weight, stupid clip location, too thick behind the edge. It has a small chip near the tip I'm not skilled enough to fix. Really should sell it.

Kizer Ki4423 (I think) beautiful knife, drop shut action, but very heavy. Fatal flaw--the blade design has no tip, in that the edge just ends, it's weird. Another to sell.

Bailey Model 2 flipper. Love it, was a gift, but that dang super tall flipper tab snags every time I try to take it out of my pocket. Clip is not ideal either.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley the lockbar cutout (or lack thereof) makes my thumb sore. Hoping to rectify that soon. Handle is a bit heavy.

I never use or carry either of my Case lockbacks. Both were gifts, but just not me.

Usually the bigger blades like khuks and the locally bought ginunting. Not really EDCable as I’m not sure how most non-knife folk would react to a big blade. Still love blades on the XL side though.

I got a lot of knives that have been carried in the past, but I don't frequently carry currently.
Bought them. Carried and used them. Weren't quite what I wanted, so I moved on. But I still have them.
They serve as reference points, both when figuring out what I want to buy next and for evaluating the newest addition.

I had this same thought last night when I was picking through knives to carry for the evening. Spoiler, there's going to be a theme here.

I have a Bailey as well and have similar thoughts on the clip. Great and beautiful knife though.

My Ontario Apache and mini Socom Auto both suffer from the same ailment. Tip down carry. I have carried the Socom a few times, but it has mostly been in jeans when it fits the coin pocket. It substituted my traditional rather than my main carry. I have yet to carry the Apache even though I've had it for a few years. That one also needs a sharpening, but it can serve as is.

Shame, because all three are arguably some of my cooler looking knives. Perhaps I'll get over that stuff one of these days.

Well.....I don't own a knife that I do not carry. When I get a new knife it's my main carry for a while.
I have a box I keep my knives in....
just reach in and grab one for the day.

I almost never carry my benchmade bugout. I don't know why. Also my ultratechs but thats because they are illegal to carry in my state.

I typically sell knives that I don't carry, but one that immediately comes to mind is the Benchmade Vicar. This is a highly underrated knife IMO. I myself overlooked it for the longest time, because at that point I was only interested in AXIS lock Benchmades. It was only when it was discontinued and steeply discounted that I decided to go ahead and pick one up, and when I did the quality blew me away (my example at least). It's a cool design, a big knife, and the action is something I almost had to feel to believe. The thing is, I just don't carry it that often for some reason. I've considered selling it, but every time I do I feel that silky smooth action, look at the resale prices, and decide it's worth more to me than I could get for it. I've considered getting some custom scales made up for it to breathe new life into it and perhaps finally give it the carry it deserves.

Other than the knives I am trying to sell, my tactical-ish knives are mostly unused. I like them, but they are not really my world and they never match my outfit or use case. I am keeping them until I have a reason to sell them.

My fancy knives - like the fluted Ti models pictured below - are used, but only at home, so I can't lose them or be forced to abuse them.

Then there are a few 111mm SAKs (the Outrider, Workchamp, OHT, and Skipper) that are too big, and because I now carry alox SAKs and a Knipex. I keep a couple in camping kits and the rest on the desk. I still like them and I will keep them, JIC.

Also Opinels. A bit too flimsy, and pocket hogs in my preferred size, and of course, not worth selling.

I have well over 50 knives.
After I've tried Spyderco, that's all I really reach for now.

I have folders for swimming, edc and everything in between, all complete with a hole in the blade.

I feel like a bit of a snob, completely unintentional.

I rarely carry a knife with under a 3" blade length now. The only exception if the Spyderco Delica which seems like a bigger knife. My big paws like a big(ger) handle. Even my ZT 350 seems to be getting smaller in my hand. Is it possible to lose weight but your hands get bigger at age 50?

I went thru a phase were I bought some smaller knives. I tried the Boker Subcom and Wharcom as money clips knives. Meh, not for me. I tried slip joints. I bought a Case and Maserin. I learned I like a lock and again, smaller blades. The exception to these rules are a SAK.

Like most folks, with trial and error over many years of carrying a knife, I have a pretty good idea what I like and don't like and what I will carry. I tend to like a 3.4+" blade, a thick non-metal handle, and a *good steel* (ie. 14c28, D2, S30V, 154cm, Vg10).

One of these days, I really need to pull out some knives and sell on the exchange.

Been stabbed by a tip down carry, and will never own a knife that is only tip-down.

I carried the Boys Bionic today, and it's definitely too beat up to sell. I know I'll never own another of this brand, do I guess this serves as a reminder.

I realized my Spyderco Domino gets neglected a bit too. I'm going to carry the GB tomorrow though I think.

Out of the twenty or so fixed blades I have six or seven have risen to the top and are part of the regular rotation.
The rest are too big or too unusual to comfortably walk around with unless I'm camping or something.
The folders that don't move are mostly early parts of the accumulation or SAKs which I keep in bags or in the car. I also have some that I bought just to mess with the scales. I also got a few traditionals that stay on the shelf.
After all the blades, I now tend to buy stuff that I will carry or use for a specific purpose.

Some patterns don't really "work" for me.
I'd rather carry a stockman for the sheepsfoot 3rd blade, than a trapper, for example. So the Trappers I have are among my less carried.
The few vintage pre-war knives I have (a couple are pre WW1) I don't carry simply because if something were to happen to it or I lost it, I could never replace it ... Stupid, I am aware.
Others only get carried when I am feeling sentimental, for special occasions, or in the case of a specialized knife, such as a Marlin Spike, when I know I am going to need it that day or week.

I look at the knives that I currently have in my collection and , in a way , it tells a story of what phases I was in at the time of purchase. I seem to have gone from buying smaller knives to preferring larger ones. It’s all task dependent but for EDC, I have gone from a sub 3 inch blade to a 3 1/2 to 4 inch blade. And as time went by and I became more knowledgeable, my taste in knives has gotten a little more expensive.

And so as to why I stopped carrying certain knives, I guess it’s because I go through different phases of what appeals to me at the time.

I have hundreds of knives, but have my "Heroes List" down to about fifteen or twenty, which I tend to rotate through while the rest sit stored away. I should probably let some of the others go, but I'll occasionally look through my drawers and fidget with them, and then I love those uncarried knives all over again. A vicious cycle for sure.

Any knife that doesn’t get carried gets sold. I’m continuously evaluating the knives I have and if there’s one that just doesn’t seem to make the cut because there’s always another that I prefer, it’s gone. I currently have 5 knives— not including SAK’s, Mora’s, Opinels, and Byrd’s which are my work/garage/around the house knives that will always have a place and wouldn’t really be worth selling.

It would be the Spyderco POLICE SS. Wife got it for me in 2001 if I’m not mistaken. My first high end folder, the one that got me started on “better” blades. Still love it for sentimental reasons, but have other folders that I’d much rather carry and use. It doesn’t see much pocket time anymore. Would never think of selling it. It will be the blade that gets buried with me one day.

That Police looks tiny in your hands, hehe.

Presently - just about every knife I own is mothballed.....

Why (you might ask?)

Because - I - have - no ---pockets.
I've put back on so much @%)@ing weight, I can't fit in anything other than sweat pants. :(

I hate being Fat-Boy Tubbygut. I worked so hard to lose 110 pounds & it seems like overnight I put 85 pounds right back on.

Silly as it may sound, one of my goals is to lose enough to fit into a pair of bib overalls.
