I've been watching "Stuck with Hackett" lately on the Science Channel. If you're not familiar with the show, it features artist/junk engineer Hackett making various items and machines out of the trash and junk at various abandoned locations. Think MacGyver meets Mythbusters meets Survivorman. Each episode, he usually has a different knife, which he uses prominently. Just thought that it was good to see people using KNIVES AS TOOLS on TV, instead of as just weapons. Good PR for us knife-knuts!

I've seen him using what looks like a CRKT M16-14SFG in a few episodes. In the fireworks episode, he was casually flicking it open while bored and watching his improvised ball mill grind black powder.

He also used the tanto point as a screw driver, which made me wince a bit.

Hello. Hackett here.
One thing we tried to do at the beginning of the season was limit me to only the tools I would normally carry on me (a knife and a lighter) and whatever I could reasonably be expected to find on site (like: pliers in a glovebox tool kit, welding rod in an old plumbing truck). The knife and the lighter were the only constants, and the knife changed pretty much every episode.
We got product placement from CRKT (http://www.crkt.com/ ) and I used one each episode. For the most part, their knives are excellent, and this is after abusing them in a manner that would make knife aficionados cry/seethe in rage. The M16-14sfg is my everyday carry/utility knife- it is in my pliers pocket right now. Exceptionally good was the Ringed Razel- on one episode I used it as a ghetto cold chisel, hammering it through a steel 55 gallon drum. Touched it up a little with a stone and it was razor sharp. Really tough, nice knife. Most of their knives were great, but a couple were real duds, crap out of the box- their multitool was garbage- poor ergonomics, lots of little design fails (poorly made/designed pliers lock, driver bits had a tendency to fall out for no reason into an overgrown field, wimpy knife blade), and the side-flipping one was surprisingly poor quality- I cut copper wire with it, and dinged the blade. However, all in all I am very pleased with their knives.
They sent a big box at the beginning of the season, including a little folder for everyone on the crew. When I tell my friends that I had FREE KNIFE DAY at work they all get jealous and regret their own, knifeless careers.

I could have sworn that it was an M16 being used to cut open the 55 gallon drum with a screw as a fulcrum. When I saw that I had to pause the TV until I figured out what knife that was. Guess my memory's playing tricks on me. Good stuff, though. I love it when these shows really abuse the crap out of their blades, but as far as toughness goes I always take it with a grain of salt figuring the company will just throw them another one for the next episode. So, it's nice to hear it actually sharpened.

As far as the content of the show goes, I was always wondering how much of your knowledge do you bring to each scenario and how much of it is learned / written for that episode. I mean, who the hell knows how to make Limelight?

I think I saw one episode where he used a CRKT Minimalist. Wharncliffe, IIRC. I must say, Hackett is a genius, and I absolutely love the episode with the abandoned hospital. I totally want to try a carbon-arc lamp sometime, now that I know how (so long as I get a metric crap ton of safety gear and have 911 dialed with my finger over the send button).

Too cool, great to have you on here.

I do enjoy watching the show and have too noticed you carry around a knife (only noticed a CKRT once, but that's cause I don't pay much attention to them! :D ) and a zippo.

Hackett actually convinced me to buy an M16. Who am I to not listen to him saying a knife is worth carrying? I mean, come on, look at the hell he puts his knives through. Him and most of the survival show hosts know which ones hold up and which ones don't.

Cool! I have the Ringel Razel that I keep in my Jeep. Great fixed blade knife. You should try out the Stubby - awesome blade shape!

Great show, BTW- big fan.

Love the show. I was very impressed in the landboat one where he took the styrofoam shape and created a mold in the sand. How did you find out about the forums btw hackett?

I'm betting that he has friends who are Bladeforums members who pointed out this thread to him.

this along with another thread in W&C and one on JD all get pulled up on the front page if one looks up "stuck with hackett knives"
