The Knives we Collect

There is a very interesting thread on another forum based on the question of whether the types of knives we chose to collect are a reflection of our personalities, occupations, etc.

In my case, I would say absolutely. As an engineer and a half-baked artist I appreciate elegant, durable, functional design. Function and asthetics are both important, but function much more so. The deceptive simplicity of a great design entails great beauty. For instance, I would never find myself buying an "art" or "fantasy" knife.

As Colonel Jeff Cooper said, "everything you need and nothing you don't". I suppose that's why I buy Busse knives.

I agree! Having collected quite a number of knives (no art-, no fantasy-knives among them), i may have become a knife-purist finally. I even hesitate to use folders any more, except a SAK or Leatherman Tool. Ok, I confess, a sebenza here and there. For me there is nothing more attractive than one of the rugged Busse Pieces, and the more they look used, the more I love them. (Maybe I'll have some "safe queens" some day ;) )greetings,
arno

That is an interesting question. I don't think my knives reflect my personality or occupation.

Personality wise I'm just a sweet teddy bear, which doesn't seem to go with Busse....but then again neither to fat little pigs, go figure  :)

My occupation has absolutely nothing to do with knives or knife related topics, so another dead end.

Might have to face it. We may never know what aspect of "me" my knives represent...it's a shame :)

Uhm Busse knives are CRAZY cool????
Conection made????????:D

Dark Nemesis,

There might be a connection that you've missed. I can't tell you how many times I've been told that our larger knives, like the Battle Mistress, Steel Heart, and most recently the MOAB, are Deeply Disturbed!!!

In fact I've been told that the MOAB looks "so disturbing" that if you forget to lock it up in your safe when the sun goes down, that you shouldn't be too surprised if, in the middle of the night, you wake from your slumber to the sound of "digging in your crawlspace"!!!! Most likely it will just be the MOAB burying some would be home-invader!!!!

Nooooo. . . . I don't see ANY correlation whatsoever!!!! :D ;)

Mike H,

Cool thread! I do think that there is a lot to be said about this subject. . . . Except of course in the case of Dark Nemesis!!!!;)

Interesting thread, Mike!

I haven't received my first Busse yet (AS, hopefully in a couple of weeks)!
I think the AS and my other knives (Fällkniven, BM, SAK, etc.) reflects at least some parts of my personality quite well.

I'm a pretty "normal" (in my own mind:) guy with a rather humble income.
I'm more of a user than a collector and I want my things to work well, keep on working and appeal to me at the same time.
I try to uphold a "no nonsense" policy in what I do and try to limit my purchases to what I really need and not what may be the hottest gizmo to come out!
At the same time, I try to buy the best that I can afford when it comes to things I use a lot - and I use my knives a lot every day!
I have no doubt that the AS will be used a lot!:D

I don't even know where to start in responding to this.

I prefer utility over aesthetics for the most part. Some of what I have I have as collector pieces (never use), maybe even "investment" (since investment means I have to sell it at some point...yeah right...).

My main collector is the Bird & Trout, (which Strabs turned down for $175 and a shrubbery...:P ). Beeeeeeaaaauuutttiiffuuullll piece man.

Others I have because of short runs (tan LMS', crinkled PR, BB PR, clipped SHBM).

Well I guess my collection fits my personality as it, like me, is all over the place. An eclectic mix, yet centered.

There is method to the madness...(at least that is what I keep telling myself and my wife...LOL)

With my knives, it's functionality above all else...

I have a strong belief that the knives we collect are a reflection of ourselves, and our (perceived) needs.

To wit; I've ordered knives thru various venues, and then knew within minutes of receipt if it was going to 'work for me' or not...if not, it was usually gone within a few days.

I have other knives that look like sh*, er, poop, but I keep them anyway, because they simply work...'old' high carbon kitchen knives as an example.

YMMV,

Mel
