Look familiar? Yes, it's the Kumar and old master khukuri and here's an update on it. This is a replica of a khukuri found buried under the floor of BirGorkha. It was nearly eaten up by rust but the kamis knew it was an old timer and sugggested to Gelbu that he take the remnant to HMG Archeological Society for ID. The HMG experts figured it was a quality piece from the Malla period so we are going to call this model khukuri the "Malla" khukuri. And, it generated so much interest with HMG and the kamis that Kumar actually got more help and advice than he wanted!

We will be offering this model with either wood or horn handle as the Konvention #1 option but can't guarantee the horn will be gray!

This is a 10 out of 10 rig hands down. The khukuri is 19 inches, 2 inches wide, 7/16 thick and weighs about 2 & 1/4 pounds. There are a couple of unique things about the khukuri which should be mentioned. The spine is flat (rather than in the traditional "V") like my old Salyan, our logo khukuri. Karda and chakma are works unto themselves with brass bolsters and chos. Fit, finish, hardness, karda, chakma, scabbard and frog all rate excellent.

Khukuri FAQ

I think that is the prettiest blade shape you have ever produced. The old timers had it right.

I am still opting for a small affordable knife for the 'gathering'. Konvention sounds too formal and way too clanish for my sensibilities.

Maybe this could be a special offering for those that want something this beautiful and pricey.

Price is $150 delivered to your door or picked up at the cantina.

When I saw this khukuri come out of the box I guessed that Kumar had received help, advice, inspiration with the manufacture of it. I was not certain but based on experience I would have bet on it -- what I had not heard was the whole story about the unearthing of the ancient khukuri and getting HMG eggheads involved in discovery process! And then EVERYBODY has some advice for Kumar about the making of it. No wonder he finally decided to go home and help the folks plant crops!

But he did a hell of a job with the final rendition! If the kid will quit rushing the final part of the manufacture he is ready for master status at age 25.

Khukuri FAQ

The Malla Khukuri! Uncle, do you know what Malla means? Well, this is then a trully special Khukuri. I'm glad the konvention is coming soon. I can't wait to see everyone in person, and pick this baby up! My new son will have an awesome blade collection when it is my time to be with my ancestors in paradise. He will enjoy the blades that will be there for him.

Pakcik Bill.

Please ... please .... & please log my name for 1 unit of this Malla Khukuri.

I guess it is love at 1st IT sight! My insight told me that it is going to be another HI hit with this model without even knowing that it is a replication of an ancient Malla period Khukuri ... I was not aware that I have an ancient taste which suddently arosed by the sight of this very model!

Since I think I could not attend the Konvention due to financial factor ... at least ... I would like to be there spiritually by having this Konvention Option #1 ... So ... again Pakcik Bill ... please! I am in on this Malla Khukuri.

NEPAL HO!

I did a quick looked-up of "Malla" on the Net and found references to a kingdom dating back five or six centuries, and some kings whom the conventional wisdom lists as good guys.

And remind the bladesmith that if it isn't signed it's a "villager".

Maybe they're "nobodies" in the caste system over there, but they're "somebodies" here!

Everybody is logged. Handle should be available in either wood or horn.

Not all the Mallas were kind and considerate. There are some real horror stories about thier rule.

I still cannot figure what the boys were doing digging up the floor of the factory unless it was to install the brick floor. That they found an ancient khukuri which is now being revived is a stoke of karma of the first order. I wonder what that ancient kami would think!

Khukuri FAQ

This one has the look of a more refined
Gelbu . Is there any chance of a bone handle , or are you out of properly cured bone . If not i'll take mine in horn .

Ah! I thought the quick Nepali history summaries I glanced at might have been a bit "upbeat."

I should not be surprised if medieval kings turn out on closer examination to have been ... medieval. Its those modern politicians who have no @#$% excuse!

In a lot of countries' histories, rulers known in the books as "King Famousguy the Great" tend to have pretty hefty body counts to their credit.

But then I can go into the "Good Book" and read about some of the things that Designated Good Guys like Moses and King David did, that would certainly in our day be considered violations of the Geneva-Hague and Helsinki conventions.

When I get my Malla Kukri, I'll be sure start its useful life with some relentlessly peaceful cuttting or chopping chore, to give it an extra dose of "good karma."

Uncle Bill,

Is it possible to get a Malla even if I don't go to the Konvention? If so, I may have to seriously consider getting one. Also, will the karda and chakma be like the original gray horn?

Christian

Bill,

You were right about this blade being a collaboration with an old master. We just didn't realize how old!
