that will be eight years old in late April. I have been thinking about buying him the same knife so that he will appreciate a pocket knife at an early age, His grandma wholeheartedly approves and is planning on buying him something similar as a birthday gift. We all know that this is a masculine "rite of passage". I would get a great deal of pleasure knowing that I have been a part of a young man's "coming of age".

Even though I currently live on a fixed income, I can set aside enough money for something that he can enjoy and learn to take care of. Should I do this, or should I let grandma buy it for him?

Speak to me.

Check with grandmother if she says yes then you could have more funds to buy a nicer one for him

It sounds like your influence on Grandma has already given you a part in the kid's first knife. Might she consult you on what knife to get?
I don't think he needs two first knives, and it shouldn't be an expensive one because he'll probably lose it or break it or trade it away.
(I sure was an idiot to trade away that Cub Scout knife just because I wasn't a Cub anymore. And to put down that Imperial...)

Although your desire to buy him one is admirable, I think, perhaps, the knife should come from Grandma, with your input if she desires. This way he will have something to remember Grandma with. Sometimes the best good deeds go unknown. :)

+1 Totally agree with John's thought on this.

Let Grandma get him the knife, and you get him a sharpening stone.

Not sure of the circumstances but I would if possible consult the parents first out of courtesy. Its a good idea though.

I checked with Grandma and ordered Rough Rider's RR111 (Orange Bone Handled Peanut). This is going to be a nice knife for the boy.(8 years old is an important milestone). I have a feeling he's going to enjoy this gift.

Grandma looked at my Case CV Yellow Delrin Peanut and said that the "Peanut" was the "perfect size" (her words) for her grandson. I paid $9.17 (postpaid) for the RR111 (Smooth Handled Orange Bone Peanut). While not expensive, it should be a good "first" pocket knife. He likes to go camping with his stepdad. (From what Grandma says, he's all boy)! I hope that it makes him happy. ;)
