The Lanyard--decoration or tool?

I don't have any lanyards on my knives and thought about getting a lanyard or two for a couple of my blades. Then I started to wonder.

So, do you put a lanyard on your cool-looking knife to make it look cooler? Or, is there a utilitarian reason for putting a lanyard on your handle?
 
I have one on my g10 Tyrade. When I carry my Tyrade its usually in my right back pocket, and the lanyard helps me take it out.
Other than that I have no other knives with lanyards.
 
Extra lashing/line
Ease of deployment for some
Extra grip in either the length or wrapped around the hand/wrist/fingers
Visibility if dropped

And then after all of that maybe for decoration.
 
on my endura just because i have fifty feet or so of free paracord and wanted to try. on my clipless dozier to help me know which end is which in my pocket. leather ones on my large cold steel voyager and a crk-style paracord one on my spyderco kris just because it looks cool. ;)

I like lanyards and use them alot on my knives


To attach the knife to your belt or round the neck against dropping.
In Scouts, the lanyard was plated into our scarf and the knife ws clipped on to our Scout belt
In the Army I had an arm lenght lanyard from my belt to a Camillus Demo. The knife sat in my cargo pocket.

To make the knife easier to use, and not fall from your hand.
Look at the loop lanyard on a Billy Club. It allows you to give a one time wrap round your hand to hold it better.
A smaller loop lanyard that you slip your hand into, against dropping but does not aid holding.

To pull a knife out of your pocket. These can be knotted fobs or some fancy colored rope work or leather
 
I use simple bright-orange 550 cord lanyards on my work knives to make it easier to find them if dropped or lost. A flashy chunk of orange cord is a lot easier to see than black anodized aluminum.

I don't bother with them otherwise.
