Howdy,

I just thought I would see what you all have been reading lately, and maybe have a bit of a discussion about the literary side of survival.

I just finished Emergerncy: This Book Will Save You Life by Neil Strauss. I found it to be a good read, a bit pat in it's conclusion. But, it really pointed at the broader market, people who don't own a tent, and such, like that. But, I do think it points at a movement among people. Anyone else read this book?

Of course Laurence Gonzales' book, Deep Survival, should be on your short list. I have read it twice, and reference it from time to time. He really addresses some key issues for those who will spend time in the out of doors.

I am reading The Unthinkable, about Stress Phsychology and Behaviour, and I am really enjoying it.

What do you all think?

Marion

I just got around to ordering Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft, a book that I have been meaning to read for some time. I also read and enjoyed Deep Survival. While there is a lot more narrative than in other survival books, I think this book does well in demonstrating the psychological effects and their impact on survival situations. Definitely a keeper.

haven't been reading much lately, but i would REALLY like to see MORE medical and psychological studies and stress information related to Survival..................

Excellent book! I love the timeless truths and wisdom in Kephart's wrtings, as well as the archaic writing style. Another good old-timey outdoors book is "The Field and Forest Handy Book" by DC Beard. I just found a used copy for a few dollars. Tons of projects and info.

I've been going through kepharts "camping & woodcraft, and nessmuks "woodcraft & camping". I've got deep survival and keep going back through it at time....

I have been reading Tom Brown's Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking. The first half of the book has lead me to enjoy my evening hikes much more than I once did. I used to be preoccupied with work and home when in the woods but now focus more on my surroundings.

That's a good book. I used to keep myself occupied for hours when I was younger, reading that book and wishing I could be an Indian tracker...

The Unthinkable is the best book I've read on the subject and I would recommend it to everyone.

I have Deep Survival, but I haven't delved into it yet.

The Patriot is a Excellent read and I am awaiting the new James Wesley Rawles Book to be in my PO box anyday

Tony, I see you have "how to stay alive in the woods.". How do you like it?

Native American Health Recipes - Acevedo
Life & Times of Col. Daniel Boone – Harley
Fooling the Bladder Cops: The Complete Drug Testing Guide - Gombos
Steal This Book – Hoffman
Silent But Deadly: More Homemade Silencers from Hayduke... - Hayduke
Soldier's Handbook for Individual Operations and Survival in Cold-Weather Areas – Training Circular, Army

any chance of a personal ranking on the books (from the technical side of the equation)? I just got done w/ Wilderness Survival by Davenport (2nd edition) it was OK, the clothing section was decent, but felt it was lacking in a lot of areas

I just ordered Bushcraft by Kochanski, be curious to see what's on the must read list.

thanks

Mike

I read it, liked it, but did not care for his depiction of Christopher Nygeres.

At all.

I enjoy Cody Lundins books, Backwoodsman magazine, Wilderness Way and Backwoods home Magazine.
