For now this is the only way I know to share a pix with you. If anybody figures out a better way please advise.

Anyway, these are the buffing wheels that we use at BirGorkha. They are handmade of old clothes that have been patched so many times they can't be patched anymore. Nothing is wasted in a country as poor as Nepal!

Do the sarkis sew the wheels together and if so are they machine stitched or hand sewn?

I couldn't imagine something like that being sewn by hand, but I suppose it's possible.

Anther question is do the kamis use the home made buffing compund or does Birghorka buy conventional buffing compound?

I would really like to see the process of making the Magic Cmpound.
Getting it fine enough to polish without leaveing scratches must be a bear of a job.
It would be much worse than screening clay for pottery.

These people really put most Americans to shame when it comes to not wasting anything. Such resourcefullnes is admirable.

We have a heavy duty sewing machine but the Sarkis do not make these wheels. We buy them commercially. I really liked them.

We use both magic stone and commercial compounds. I have a pix somewhere of an apprentice applying magic stone to a buffing wheel which I'll post -- when?

When Yangdu and I had an apartment in Nepal I'd sit the trash can out by the door in the AM. I'd go back in an hour and it would be empty. Papers, cans, even scraps of food would be gone. Nothing is wasted!
