What is it?

This is the mark of the kamis medallion and here's the story behind it.

A good customer and pal asked me to get him a small piece of steel with the marks on the kamis engraved on it. He had a notion he might carry it on his keychain. So, I ordered one for him.

The kamis would not go for the steel and my cheap idea. They said anybody who cared enough to ask for their marks deserved something better and asked Gelbu to get something nice made for the interested customer and to take the cost from their wages.

This is what we got but BirGorkha will pay for it, not the kamis. Specs are 2.5 inch in diameter and 5 ounces and a shade over 1/8 inch thick. Tab with hole at the top for neck carry if you are so inclined. You see the double dragons around the perimeter and the marks of the kamis inside. Top is Bura and moving clockwise we have Sher, Sanu, Kesar, Kumar and Murali. The back of the medallion is lavishly engraved.

I can't outguess the kamis and they can't outguess me. This is not really what I wanted and not what I ordered but I can't fault the kamis for trying to send something better.

If anybody wants one of these I'll order it. Cost will be $30 and we will pay shipping.

Solid brass and you are logged. I am not sure if this thing is going to take off like wildfire or if it's just you and me, Dan.

They did not say but I am guessing by the looks of this medallion that the kamis pound out the slug in BirGorkha and Bhimsen, Bura's oldest son, does the engraving.

See you in a couple of weeks, Dan, and I've got a few nice goodies here for you and the conventioneers besides the free topis Pala sent. I may have all the topis given away by convention time but I'll have something else better than a topi.

Me too Me too
=)
I'd love to have something to help spread the word of the outstanding craftmanship of these gentlemen. Well, atleast a less threatening way that is. A publicly-safe item.

It is beautiful and full of spirit, John! It carries the BirGorkha spirit of "doing your best and getting better all the time." And it is done in the shop by the kamis whose marks appear on the medallion and the engraving is done by the son of a kami, Bura. And, it really does talk to you.

If I were not so damned sure of the way of karma this one would be in my own pocket instead of going to the guy who wanted a little steel version.

I am ordering 10 more and have asked for an approximate delivery date. Stay tuned. Everybody is covered.

I received email from the owner of this original piece and he wanted to pay MORE than the asking price of $30. Only at HI do customers ask if they can pay more.

All right, fine. Who can resist the $30 items? And it is a fiendishly clever way to encourage more k sales. I look at the medallion and see that my four knives all come from two of these gentlemen (Sher and Kumar). Once you see all the marks together then you just know you have to have at least one from each kami! Very slick there Uncle Bill! My key-ring already carries around a Steyr AUG sight adjustment tool and a Leatherman Micra but I will make room. If I ever need to take somebody out I can always throw my keys at them.

As I was looking at this first one I thought, "just a little thicker and this would make a great tsuba for the katanas!"

Our old timers and visitors have no marks but we are not getting many of them since we moved into the middle of the vegetable fields. I think they now assist our regular full timers and carry the mark of the kami they help.

Please put me down for one of these, Bill. I feel like I've got to get one if only by way of conveying to the kamis collectively how much I appreciate all their work. Plus, it's really cool. Although I suspect that a 5-oz medallion, worn around the neck, will eventually give a crushing chest injury.--Jance
