The Martial?

MDP mentioned in another thread that "the Martial is on its way." I have heard about this knife a few times, that it will either have a rolling lock, or one of the new locks that Spyderco has been working on. I have also heard that it will most likely be a Y2K (compliant?

) model. Is there any chance of seeing any pictures of the Martial anytime soon?

They had some pictures on knifecenter about half a year ago, but I can´t seem to find them now. Rolling lock. Nothing fancy.

OD - the Martial folder was the pattern that we used to begin development on the Rolling Lock. There was no immediate plan to use it in production. We showed it at the SHOT show. Should we decide to produce the model, it will be marketed primarily to LEOs with a trainer. Do not have any photos at this time.

Sal,

I hope when you say, "will be marketed primarily to LEOs with a trainer", you are not saying marketed exclusively. This is one of the Spyderco's I looking forward to in the coming year. Some of us would love to get a hold of the "martial blade craft folder". I actually don't think LEO's are your biggest audience for this folder. They have "martial projectile devices" as the primary defensive tool and practice accordingly. Some LEO carry knives but certainly more for utility than anything else.

Sing - "Promoted to LEOs" does not mean collectors or Martial students cannot get them. We believe that promoting martial items to the general ELU may be in poor taste due to the potential for misunderstanding the motives of the company.

At Spyderco we believe that "good guys" should have the necessary means to prevent "bad guys" from hurting innocents. "Good guys" are not all LEOs.

Marion - thanx. That is the basic pattern. We've made a few minor changes since then. The model makes itself evident in the hand more than to the eye. The model is still in R & D refinement. There is second blade shape (similar to the Calypso jr.) that will also be available with the same handle, as well as equal weight trainers for each version.

Not designed for volume sales. More of an Acura NSX for the few that seek that.

Sal, IIRC you mentioned previously that you weren't sure what color the handle should be on the trainer. I've never done any knife training, but in firearms training, it is traditional to use red. I'd recommend the same shade of red as the red guns.

Martial with Calypso JR blade...? That´s pretty close to that "Special Police" I asked for some time back. Gee. Nice.

Thanks MDP. That looks a heckuva lot like that James Keating Chinook (or whatever it was called?). But, I think I like the Martial better. Yep, much better. Nice!! Really like the handle shape.

Thanks for all the replies/info.

Sal, please! make it tip down with a "large" opening hole (like the Mil). Are you guys taking orders on this already - I want mine in now because we are still waiting for the Starmate here in South Africa - Ramrod said it has been backordered 4 times already.

Deon - Sorry. The Starmate production is steady and pieces are going out every week. At this time, the demand is larger than the capacity for manufacture. The Golden facility is rather small.

Ramrod is pretty high up on the list so I would guess it won't be too long.

Sing - thanx.

Sal, as a suggestion for possible improvements to most Spydercos, I would suggest using a similar style finger guard as found on the Martial. You wouldn't neccesarily need a finger notch, just extend the finger guard in the same fashion as the Martial. It wouldn't change the lines of the knives by much and would add some more security to the user.

Just my .02
