Went to see The Mexican with Julia Roberts, Brad Pitts and Gene Hackman. The story is about the recovery from Mexico of an antique pistol with a unique, though dubious legend attached to it. Thought it'd be a good movie since I like the southwest and hispanic culture (thanks to Bill Jordan and Skeeter Skelton). Ought to be at least a little bit of blade stuff, too, huh?
No such luck.
Julia Roberts plays a self absorbed ditz, and Brad Pitts a clueless fumbling jerk. Gene Hackman only appears briefly toward the end. I don't care if Roberts and Pitts had been hard core Sebenzanistas or showered with a Spydie Military hung around their neck, I couldn't like or even be interested in their characters.
The plot was weak and its only purpose seemed to be to illustrate just how incapable of adult behaviour and unlikable these two are.
Furthermore, the movie supports a characterization of Mexicans as poor, dumb and borderline criminal (some not so borderline).
To top it off, I surf by Matt Drudge's site and catch Roberts' tirade against Bush. I've no problem that she might disagree with Bush's ideas, but this woman continues the shallow Clintonesque personal attacks that characterized the last 8 years. ( http://www.drudgereport.com/julia2.htm ). Why are some people incapable of discussing ideas without making it personal (on both sides).
I really regret spending the money.
