The most radical thing I ever did with a Busse knife is chop on some concrete with my basic 9. I was trying to cut and pry a fencepost out of the ground... I was chopping for about 10 minutes and nothing was happening so I decided to take a look. I had been chopping into the concrete holding the fencepost in place! I looked at the edge expecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprized! It had a few chips and dings, but they were easily sharpened out. It was way less damage than I expected. I have to admit though, when I saw that I had been chopping into pure concrete I just about $hit a brick. I was really concerned that the edge would be ruined. Needless to say, it wasn't - that's why Busses rock!
My basic 9 has seen way more action than that though. It has cut down about a gazillion trees, cut up steaks, cut open lots of packages, chopped coconuts in half, cut up old refrigerators, chopped up old cars, pried crates and pallets apart, totally destroyed some older pieces of furniture, hammered nails with the spine, cut firewood and tinder, and shaved the sharp edges off of my kids' bed frame. I have only gave it a good sharpening once. Most of the time it just needs steeling and stropping. If I used it really hard maybe a couple of strokes on a ceramic rod and she's good to go! That one time it really needed sharpening was when I chopped on the concrete!
My Basic 9 has been through hell and it just looks better to me. It's beauty lies in knowing that I can depend on it. It is scuffed, scratched, silent and deadly!
