Guys,

I have been wanting to post this for a while .. I have been working hard to keep up with my orders for Lam grips, rifle stocks and other shop projects during the last two months but finally, here it is. These pics show 9 boxes full of sorted sized and matched Semi fancy, Fancy and exhitbtion grade becker grips. There are an avrage of 30 sets per box ,so that's over 250 sets of grip blanks!

I was forced to get organized with these as a few months ago when my shop started to resembled the original Star Trek TV episode called "The trouble with Tribbles". You know the one where the Starship Enterprise is over ran by those cute little alien furballs that reproduced at an alarming rate..After sorting through 10 years work of high grade gunstock wood cutoffs, the little gems were taking over my shop, so they need to be rounded up an corralled before they stampeded the workbench.

There are blanks sets cut for all the Bcker families- Large BKs, Tweeners, and the neck knives. About 80 Large sets, about 80 Tweener sets , 50 half length Neck knife grips and another 50 full length Necker blanks. The species are mostly American Eastern Black Walnut, Western Black Walnut, Bastogne Walnut ( English/Black Hybrid), Turkish Grown Walnut, Eastern Hard Maple, Western Big Leaf Maple, Curly Eastern Cherry and Oregon Myrtlewood. Most of this wood came off of blanks that were worth $200-600 + in their raw form- high grade stuff. They are the choice bits.

Like all high grade gunstock wood they are air dried. These are about 10 years+ old. The bright sunlight these pics were taken in washes out the color quite a bit but due to the air drying, the colors in these peices of wood are gorgeous. As grips are made from them, More detailed pics will show up in the next few days and weeks. They are hard, dense and not just picked for figure but grain flow and lack of imperfections for strength- which I feel is important on Beckers- especially the big knives.

Most of this wood will be milled in the next 8 weeks into grip inventory. I have some great life changes coming in August (for the better) and I have to mill through these while I have the time.

The bottom pic shows a closeup of the first BK sets finished from this group.

Stay tuned to this station for more updates as they become available.. Thanks for looking :)

When you get a set of the tweeners wood done, let me know. A lighter wood... I want to get a set to put on, cause I want to polish the blade on the 17 and do a light wood set of scales.

C,

I have plenty of Lighter Tweener scales. Lots of curly Maple and Myrtle .Some really pretty Marbled Tan colored English walnut is in that box ,too D;)

I will be unveiling some new design options for guys who want to do a home permanently glued on installation with Corbys. It can be done on your kitchen table with nothing more than a screw driver, sand paper and epoxy.

I am planning on some Becker upgrades on my own knives and it seemed to be the best way to help everyone else who'd be doing the same.

The going has been slow on these, just the trimming sizing and sorting, grading of those sets took two full shop days. But it IS progressing..:)

Wow!!! Man o man I can see all of my Beckers fully dressed and ready to dance! I'm looking forward to the updates and will set aside a little moolah for you. :D
Quick question - is it possible to do the scales without epoxy? I know I will love them for the first 6 months to a year but will eventually want to change them out. I may even end up buying 2 or 3 sets for my 2 & 10.
Thanks!

R,

A quick reply before I dive back into the salt mine..

There will be tow basic scale options for the large BKs and the Tweeners-
Regualr bolt on scales- same as factory

And the DYI scales will be Pre -milled glue on types with corbys for a custom knife fit and finish you can install with minimal tools. And yeah they will be permanent.

If you want to swap 'em around you'll need to get the factory style.

is that a blade mod on a 14? looks like it was ground into a ''izula'' shape? I likes that.

nice wood too LOL, I see a couple dark pieces in there that is killer.

Thrill,

Actually, that BK14 blade grind is sort of a Long combat type swedge much like BlackJack trailguide or Randall Bird and Trout....The dark line along the top blade is actually the blade spine shape, not just a shadow You'll see better pics of it when I complete the mods.;)

Speaking of better pics, I'l get some much better closeups of some of the blanks and finished grips down the road. the bright afternoon sun washed out most of the detail and the pics were mostly to show the amount o wood I have amassed more than highlight any figured pieces.

HOT DAMN! you sir got wood....

yeah that just plain sounds weird, but congrats on the stock, that'll provide some hours o' work and many a happy beckerhead

I want to know when some DIY scales are ready! Especially some of the darker burl-type wood.

C,

Will do.

When the first dozen are milled sometime very soon, I'll post 'em here. There will be quite an assortment in that first batch. All of it will be fancy wood.

Wow! What a trove! I'd definitely be interested in bolt-on darker wood for my 7.

Jim,

Any shots of what the finished 14 scales look like?

The "short" veriosn will be about like a factory ESEE style Micarta grip. It's about the only way to do a fuly exposed "ring" grip on the Eskabar/Izula handles in wood that will not chip out around the hole.

My "long" style full sized grips look like this. It's .300" on each side and it's hand filling but with the nice round radius all around ,it is VERY comfortable and makes a totally new knife out of the BK14/Izula. It's still is compact enough for neck carry. I much prefer it to even the factory Delrin in terms of feel.

It's not bad looking ,either. ;)

Wow. I'm definitely in for a set of full-sized scales, Jim. I'll bet those come out great.

If they don't it won't be due to the quality of the raw materials..:)

I was looking over the high grade box as I need to set aside two fancy sets for a few long planned large BK projects. Fully stripped, polished blades , glued on Corby bolted scales with liners- the whole nine yards- Custom grade all the way.

I looked over 30+sets and chuckled because truly, I could not pick between them. Lot's of pretty wood in the top 50% of those groups. And the rest is very handsome.
