Just got the SOG Tech Bowie in mail. I'm no less impressed with this piece than the original Bowie. In fact I like it much more. Incredible workmanship. Some of the ill rumors about this newer knife's production origins were beginning to get me worried. Of course those of whom who haven't actually field tested these yet. Oh well.

The new Kryton handle with duel white washers feel great in the hand, not too mention the deep black chrome of the blade, hilt and pummel. I just kind of like the new kydex sheath that it came in, but talked with Bonnie at SOG yesterday and ordered the black leather w/stone sheath for this bad boy. To me the leather carries better in the field and just seems "right" for this particular fixed blade.

So now it's this new wicked fixed blade and my graphite Flash Tanto with black chrome blade to match. Quite a pair.

Anyone out there who has an affinity for the Bowie line of fixed blades; by all means pick this one up! Fantastic!!

very sexy knife, i love the blade. Are you planning on using it or are you gonna put this one away and admire its beauty?

If you could i would love to know the differences of this knife and the original SOG Bowie because I have been obsessed with the Original SOG Bowie for quite some time now... :p

It'll be hard to use it because of the great looks, but it's what it's meant for and why I bought it. Yes, it will go to the field with me. The coating is suppose to be between 61 and 65 Rockwell, hence the reason for the kydex sheath. It won't scratch it. In fact it should take quite a bit of abuse to damage the blade. Even wood would be no match for it. So any field use including gutting large game such as Elk(if you would be so inclined to do so with a knife this large), shouldn't damage the coating at all. We'll see. It will be fun testing
:)

Lurp: If you like that original SOG Bowie, then you definitely need this one in your collection!

AWESOME knife!!!!! I have only one problem with this knife......... and that problem is that I don't have one. :D:thumbup:

wow, great picture !!!

The SOG Bowie (S1) was my first-ever SOG ...... and by all accounts, my first-ever Real Knife .... it's too embarassing to talk about, so don't ask.
so if any of you (hint, hint) have any inclination, however minor, that you want an S1 (hint, hint) ..... well, I'm fully confident there'll be no disappointment in your future when it arrives.

As for diff's between the Tech Bowie and the SOG Bowie (S1), blade thickness comes to mind.
The S1 blade is 0.280" ...... whew, that's thick one. But for all of that, it's so light and feathery in the hand.....
The Tech Bowie is 0.240" ...... too thin for me .... but Mr SOG has spoiled me for "thick" (long story).

Another diff is the handle material.
The S1 is stacked leather, and has little whoop-de-doo grooves for the fingers. N-I-C-E is the handle.
The Tech Bowie has the Kraton rubber (per the website) with whoop-de-doo finger grooves. Don't know how that would feel, but I'll bet it's comfortable.

And my final comment is the blade material.
The S1 has gun-blued carbon steel (SK-5). Man oh man, it takes an awesome edge. And it doesn't take long to mess up the beautiful gun-blue, I completely destroyed mine by cutting up cantaloupes and honeydew melons..... go figure.
The Tech Bowie has AUS 8 stainless..... ain't nothing wrong with the way SOG does up their AUS 8.

Well, there's 3 differences .....

Cheers,

Carl

Thanks NPH for pointing out the true differences in these two outstanding knives. All the reasons you pointed out are the reasons I like this new SOG Tech better...
The thickness of the blade is so negligable most won't even notice. Let's just say it's very thick. I've owned both knives and the fact that this one IS stainless steel and coated with something this hard and ware resistant is the reason I wanted it for field use. The Kryton handle just adds a bit more security to the handle. Those leather washers on the original can get slippery.

Hi Guys
not usually a SOG customer but i was offered a Recon Bowie for good money, man I'm hooked
This thing is perfect. Happy Kiwi. :D

the Recon Bowie is one cool knife..... fantastically sleek lines.

Get out in the field and tear it up !!!!

Cheers,

Carl

What were the rumors about this knives production that had you worried? I ordered the Tech Bowie last week (will arrive today) and hadn’t heard anything pro or con about its production.
Thanks.
