Yesterday, the NCKK's gathered again to enjoy friendship, food, and (what else??) blades. David Baker swung by my place and picked me up, where we made our way over to knifemaker Andrew McLurkin's home in Raliegh, NC. We were welcomed into Andrew's home and got to fondle two of his latest folding creations (he posted pictures of these not too long ago). We also had a look around his shop and saw a folder he had in progress. Andrew has a small but cozy shop that is immaculate. David and I are doubtiing that he actually makes knives there, just has the equipment up for display only

After this, David, Andrew, and myself took a short ride over into Cary where we met up with Chris Raymond (CPR) and Michael McLaren (NCBlades) for lunch at the Horowitz Deli at McGregor Village Shopping Center. As any usual NCKK lunch gathering, we got a table in the corner and pulled out all the "hardware" for "show and tell"
smile.gif
Following lunch, we went just next door to Beck's Cutlery to ogle their inventory of blades. Here are some pictures from our visit:

Dex,
Thanks for posting. We had a blast! With all the blades on the table while we were at the deli, the waitress was hesitant to reach over the table to pick up the dirty dishes
biggrin.gif
A great time was had by all. Becks is one of a handlul of knife stores in the country where you can find customs as well as production knives on display. The have the biggest Randall selection I have ever seen!
I wish all knife lovers had as good a group to hang around with as the NC Knife Knuts. We're lucky and we know it

Man we did have a blast! Chris and I arrived a little early and went into Beck's Cutlery to sneak a peak before the others showed up. I showed my wife one of Andrew's knives and she handed me the checkbook. I wish every knife purchase was that easy. We had a great time looking at each other's knives. I am selling some of my other customs so I can get another McLurkin folder now. It was great meeting with Dexter, Chris, David, and Andrew. Hope we can do this more often. Thanks for a great afternoon guys. By the way, did anyone buy anything at Becks after I left?

I highly recommend that if you live anywhere near Cary North Carolina that you take a day trip to Beck's Cutlery and go next door to Horwitz Deli for lunch. It is a very good place to eat and look at knives.

Hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

I wonder if Alec Baldwin or Cher need help moving?

Thanks Dexter, always like hearing what you guys are up to! Looks like a nice shop too!

Good to see you carrying the BladeForums bags! Nice touch...

Wish I lived closer, I'd surely join you.

Hey...where was Kelly in all this?

Michael - David bought a small Victorinox Signature II Lite and Chris got a Victorinox CyberTool. I managed to walk out of Beck's with the same amount of knives as I did when I walked in
biggrin.gif

Gary - Kelly is the budding knifemaker in our midst. While we were in Raliegh, he was at GenO Denning's place getting grinding lessons.

I Agree with all of the above. At lunch there were so many kinves floating around the table I'm sure I missed seeing about half of them. We had a fun time!! I really enjoyed hanging out with David, Dexter, Chris, and Michael. Great guys one and all!

Beck's Cutlery is definitely worth visiting. Pasty and Ronnie couldn't be more helpful.

Until next time.

Andrew

Dex...where is your Will Fennel Hat?
biggrin.gif

Also, did everyone noticed that Dexter wore cargo pants. Lets guess how many knives he had on him. I say 16. Am I close, Dexter?

Knives I had with me? The bag holds 10 in each pocket, 3 of my Simonichs were lying in the bottom, Simonich/REKAT D2-E Pikuni on the neck, BM 690 in RH pocket, BM 770 worn "ink pen style" on my shirt, and the MOD CQD in the right hand leg pocket. 17 in total. You are pretty darn close!!! How did you know???

I had a blast! Ronnie and Patsy are both troopers to put up with our motley crew. I enjoyed the paper cutting demonstration that Ronnie gave us

Lunch was excellent, thanks Michael! I'll buy next go 'round. There's the semi-annual gun/knife/jerky show in G'boro on the 27th, so if anyone's interested we can hit that and then go to Beck's for rhe real stuff.

Later,

Great thread. I'm outside of Wilmington and I didn't know there was a true "knife" store within 2 hours of home. Thanks for putting this on the forum, I'll have to go visit Becks someday.

Nobody.

Dex,
Thanks for the pics. Like Gary, I would join you guys in a heartbeat if I wasn't so far away, (that is if you let someone from the "left" coast in). Beck's looks like a place I could spend HOURS in.

Nobody - welcome to the forums! If you would like to join us for a Winston-Salem or Charlotte gun show, the Blade Show, or the SouthEastern Custom Knife Show, feel free to email me for more info. Would love to have you a part of the group! If you want to see some of the fun we have had so far, click on the "NCKK" link in my signature.

But since I know ya, I can sneak you in. LOL! I've known about Beck's for a long time but have never made a trip out there. They have an impressive collection of kitchen cutlery, including some custom made ones. It's not everyday where you get to hold a 12" damascus chef's knife with stag handles. A beauty!

Becks is always worth the trip!!
smile.gif
I wish I could have been there. Looks like everyone was having fun. I'll be stopping by Beck's in a few weeks. Patsy is holding a knife for me. I can hardly wait.
smile.gif
Hope to meet up the you guys again real soon. When's the next meeting?? Or do we know yet??

CRAP! I miss all the fun these days.
frown.gif
Well, not ALL the fun. I drove down to GenO's place expecting to slap some aluminum together for a coupla grinders, but ended up in front of the grinder again.
smile.gif

GenO presented me with a few unexpected presents. The first was a Big Boy model with no guard (do NOT ask him to make another one. He won't do it.) that I discovered in his reject pile. Its flaw? A tiny scuff on one of the blade flats where the knife jumped out of the grove and hit the flat.

He also handed me a little neck knife and said, "Merry Christmas." Indeed! This is an area he's thinking about getting into.
smile.gif

I commented that between the neck knife, the Big Boy, and the little C models that he had done a few months back, adding one of his B models would make a perfect hunting set at a reasonable price. He took a partialy ground and heat treated blade off the wall and told me to make one.
biggrin.gif
I was much more comfortable in front of the grinder this time around, and GenO only had to save me a few time.
wink.gif
GenO finished up the knife and the set was complete.

From top to bottom - Big Boy, B model, two C models, and the neck knife. All have satin finished ATS-34 blades, tapered tangs, bead-blasted black micarta handles with red spacers. All are also guardless.

Whatdya think?

So, I didn't miss out on ALL the knife fun yesterday. LOL

By the way, that is me standing there with the Bladeforums bag. I turned it around so I could advertise for Mike and Spark. I was hoping maybe they would offer me some cash or a nice knife for that

Why don't all the NCKK meet at the Raleigh Gun and knife show on Jan.20? Bob Curran and I will have a table. I am sure Bob will be bringing some nice customs for us to drool over.

Y'all can count on myself,Dex,Kelly and possibly Mike(deadinnc) Yates being at the Raleigh gun/knife show on Sat. Jan. 20. We hope to get there around 11:30 AM and meet at Bob and Michael's (narruc and ncblades) table. Their table will be about midway back, third row in from the left if they have the same space as before. I can promise that good friendship, really cool knives and good food will be there in abundance!
special note to Michael;I hope you are tired of the new Terzuola you just got so I can sweep it away from you there!

FYI, I bought the other knife Andrew Mc Lurkin had finished while we were on this last visit. This young man is turning out Michael Walker/Ron Lake level quality knives, and he's still getting better.Don't scoff at my words till you have held one of his pieces!
