Do any of you ever have a knife that just won't be finished. I've been working on this thing for a week now. I sneak in about an hour during the day and another 3 or 4 hours in the evening. Nothing special has gone wrong, it has just taken forever to grind it and now the blade just won't take a proper satin finish quickly.

Some blades want to be made but this one's fighting back. Cut myself 4 times now and still have more to do. Gee....the handle's finished, the sheath's done, the guard's ready to install.....it's driving me nuts!!

Put it down, and start another knife (or two). Revisit it in a month or so, and all will be well... :)

well feb, will be five years at the grind and i have had knives be put aside for a year or more. and then one day i know just what to do.:D

Know what you mean, I have a 52100 bowie sitting on top of my work bench, played ever loving l*ell getting the heat treat right because of the size, finaly got the gaurd finished and blade hand rubed, blade tested, havent decided on a handle yet. Last time I did anything to it was back in Nov.

By the time I get back to it, it'll probly wind up in a damascus billit!

Definatly leave it alone for a while, then give it anouther try a little latter.

All the time to me as well...Seems like I can get to a certain point on some and then it seems to take forever and I wind up getting no were quick.Thats when it is time to go do something else ..

Remember they are beautiful woman and if you don't talk sweet enough to it,she will fight you all the way:D

Someone said "don't push a good position". Meaning, the last stage went well and you're about to begin the next step and somehow it doesn't feel good. I have learned to listen to that feeling and to put it down for another day. Of course, knifemaking isn't my livlihood, so I can afford to listen to the small voices. (or maybe it isn't the knives talking to me? maybe it really is the steel gnomes? or my wife? I've got a couple that I pick up and the "creative juices" just don't work at that moment and I lay them down. I have a couple in production in different stages. I just finished my last tanto that I started before last Thanksgiving! it all comes down to what your mood is at the time--Dan

Yep, got 3 sittin on the shelf now...done except for handles and final finishing. Just can't seem to make up my mind what handle material to use. So, I just ground out some more blades...here we go again.
