No, I'm not talking about toilets or urinals...

It seems to me that the old American (meaning USA) standard was the three-blade stockman.

But lately it seems that I don't see many folks carrying those around.

So what do you think is the new American standard?

I think the one-hand liner-lock is the new standard.
But not a high-dollar liner-lock like an Emerson.
More like a Buck or Gerber liner-lock.

My brother thinks the Leatherman Micra or Squirt is the new standard.

What do you guys (and gals) think?

Allen.

I think the Victorinox/Wenger SAKS are probably the most common knives around, even many people that aren't into knives have a least one. Then probably the Wal-mart one hand openeres and small Leathermen.

i've also got to say a sak. they are for sale just about everywhere which what makes them so popular i think. when is the last time you went into wal-mart and bought a spyderco?

I think it depends on what part of the country you're in. SAKs are what I see the most in New England.

I'd bet you'd find more people with SAKs and Mulitools than anything else. Buck 110s might follow next as well.

I think any single bladed lock knife is the standard now. Everyone I work with has a single bladed lockback. Take your pick on brands. :)

I own a buck 110 and a leatherman. I'm biased against anything that comes with a magnifying glass and tweezers :D , so I'm definitely not a swiss army guy. If there's a new standard though I would say it's the multitools. Even my mother who was alway's anti-weapon and anti-knife has one.

Interesting thought: the most common EDC knife may be dependant on the age group in question. I think that, for anyone over 60, the stockman pattern of knife probably still holds out at #1. For anyone less than 30, I bet a 1-handed opener, locking folder is king (Gerber, Spyderco, Buck, Benchmade, etc). For the 30-60 year set, I would guess it to be either a multi-tool (usually Leatherman) or a SAK.

under 30: single-handed opening, folding knife
30-60: Leatherman or SAK
60+: stockman

Good point Trout Tamer.

I'm also wondering just how geography is affecting this?

Alot of folks have mentioned the Buck 110 and its clones, but around here (the Charlotte NC region) I really don't see them very often.

When I was a kid I saw the Buck 110 or Schrade LB7 pouch on alot of belts, but now I mostly see pocket-clips.

Would a Spyderco Delica count? Granted it's made in Japan, but it's an American company.

I'd say that longer ago it was the traditional slipjoints, then the Buck 110/112, but now the majority of pocket knives are 1 hand openers with pocket clips. You know..."tactical" folders. If not the Delica, then perhaps the Military as the quintesential tactical folder.

From what I see people carrying, Fury brand knifes are the New American Standard.

(Ok, so I'm Canadian. But it's still North America.) From what I've seen, older people have Buck 110s, young people have a Delica (or similar knock off), and the modern working man has a Leatherman.

I see mostly leathermans. In my area, it seems to have replaced the Buck 110 as the "worn on the belt in a leather pouch" knife. For in the pockets, it would have to be SAK.

My standard is a 2 blade Case Trapper, CV steel.. I guess I'm "oldskool", yet I'm only 24 years old, lol.
