Picked up the New Pioneer yesterday at Wally World, some members had picked it up and said they liked it. I kind of balked at the cover price, but figured what the hell. It's a Harris publication, they publish several gun magazines, and Tactical Knives. Steven Dick wrote several articles, on knives, and one on making hard cider. Hard cider is the only alkeehol ;) I drink, so it was one of the first I read. Several homesteading articles, also, several firearms articles and basic survival articles. All in all, while I like Backwoodsman better, New Pioneer has that folksy feel that BWM has. I think it will have something for everyone, and bring different groups into different hobbies. A very down home type magazine. Haven't had a chance to read it back to back though, I have the July/Aug issue of BWM, the July issue of Knife World, and New Pioneer to read sitting on the shelf. I like what I see, I don't know if it will be quarterly, bi monthly or annually. $9.95 is a bit much for bi monthly. Yeah, you can get a lot more from WSS, and other wilderness sites, but it is more fun to read BWM cover to cover. I wouldn't buy it monthly, but I hope it sticks around.

I mentioned it in the Starting Over thread.

I like it a lot for the reasons it's different from BWM -- namely, it's more on how to live a wilderness lifestyle in the modern world, rather than how to live in the wilderness in the 1700s.

Both are good perspectives, but I have a feeling this will grab a larger audience opf people who just want to cut back on the rat race, and live a simpler life, but not necessarily go hardcore off the grid.

this sounds like a cool magazine... i'm going to have to see if i can find it..

Thanks, I'll have to go look for it now...it will be my Bday present to myself :)

I just glanced through it but it looked like it was full of good/solid info. It was a choice between it and the new issue of Backwoodsman due to funds. I went with the Backwoodsman for nostalgia sake. If it's still there when I get paid next week I'll probably pick it up and take it home. More reading material means more knowledge.

I strolled through it at the local grocery store, man that cover price, I liked it, I may pick it up in a few days.....

Considering it says New Pioneer 2010, I would guess it's an annual or semi annual publication, and hence, worth the price.

Kind of like how Guns & Ammo will put out it's "Complete Book of . . ." twice a year, and they cost $9.99.

I picked up a copy today (darn you guys!). It says "Display until November", so it may be quarterly. I haven't read it thru yet, but there are knives, goats, root cellars, blacksmithing, hunting, gathering and more. Reminds me somewhat of Mother Earth News/Back Home/Backwoods Home with a touch of Backwoodsman. It is 130 pages though, so it isn't likely a monthly. I'll pass my copy on to another member when I am done with it.

I picked up a copy as well, looks good. The page with the table of contents/publisher's information states it will be an annual publication.
