I'm referring to the one with the RTAK style blade rather than the original style blade that's coming out. Anyone have any pictures of this thing being held in someone's hands or compared side to side with an original rat mastiff?

Where have you heard that they are releasing a new Rat Mastif? I think that is just a pipe dream unless I missed something.

or has this already been released and I'm a little too late?

yeah that's what I just now noticed. eh. I like that knife though. wish they'd do just a full flat out 10" blade. basically a full tang version of the dog father. I'm a sucker for full tang knives.

yeah I did notice them although the retail prices that swamprat is offering seem to be somewhat less expensive. I'm looking for a strong working knife that I mean to put to use. I was looking at the current batch of battle mistresses in INFI but I was told there were a few knives that had problems with the edges rolling and bending. The edges were made very thin. Does anyone know if Busse will do custom orders for the battle mistresses where they can be ordered with solid thick chopping edges?

or am I completely wrong about the edges to begin with?

thanks

The busse FBM will hold up really well to almost any chopping scenario... But if you want an obtuse edge, look for the FFBM (Fat Fusion Battle Mistress.)

But since this is the rat forum, you could also look for the Ratweiler (8"), the Rat mastiff (9"), or the Rat Daddy (10").

Any of these knives will beg to chop...

I would LOVE to have one of those big choopers, however I feel it will be a looooooong time coming, people seem to be craving the smaller blades and the way they are released I would say sit down and settle in for the winter it will be a while.:grumpy:

yeah rat daddy's seem to be just as expensive as the battle mistress. is there any comparison between the swamp rat choppers and the battle mistress? Which chops better over all?

The FBM will be a little bigger knife overall... The RD is longer, but the FBM is wider / heavier. I think the FBM will chop minutely better, but others have disagreed.

Honesty, either knife with a proper edge will do very well.

I currently use a RD, and a BM-e, but no FBM. I got the RD for a reasonable price, already well used/loved and have seen no need to "upgrade" to a FBM. The RD is a GREAT knife and chopper.

But if I were looking for another right now, I'd wait for a good deal on any of the knives mentioned. For example, a very cool BM-e with snakeskin handles sold for 450 or so yesterday on the exchange --- that was a great deal. If you're patient, you'll find a RD or a Rat Mastiff for 300-350 used // or a FBM used for 375.

My advice, just keep your eyes open on the exchange daily and snag the first really good deal on any of these knives. Good Luck!

I thinned out the edge on one of my FBM's really thin and it only rolled and dented (oh boy did it ever!) when I was cutting a soft steel bedframe. That same edge was thicker than needed for chopping hardwood, slicing food, and even standing up to digging in rocky soil. It was only too thin for my one, single idiocy. Thickened the edge up just a little when resharpening and it splits coconuts without rolling, denting, or dulling. It's no Rat Mastiff Chopper, but there's nothing wrong with it and wasn't before until I took it to a coarse stone.

Totally sympathize with you. :grumpy: x2! Just the same, look at the knives that hang around on the exchange and get sold mint for less than cost and look at the ones that appreciate even when used. The GW phenomenon might be on its way out, but the Howling Rats, Leaner Meaners, and Active Duty knives all get circulated faster than dollars. With lots of us not being in the woods as often as we might like, it's easier to EDC a Howling Rat or Bandicoot rather than a Ratweiler.

I hear you, I would love to get my hands on a FBM however with my knife habbit lately being what it is if I pulled the trigger on a $400.00+ knife purchase that would certainly lead to my divorce  as well as the fact that if I spent that much on a blade I would tend to want to make it a safe queen rather than chopper. I would save that distinction for the hopefully soon to be released LE Dogfather over on Scrapyards store

No knife is worth that.

LE Dogfather?! Boyohboya!

Well, in the meantime, hoping for a SRKW muddy Baby Rat Hunter and SRKW muddy Ratmastiff Chopper.

I would not hold my breath on the DFLE's.
The total bargains of the big choppers are the battle rats. 200$ to 225$
They cost more than the DF's did new but are 75$ cheaper (at least) on the exchange.
Another wicked deal on big knives are the Scrapyard Hookguards. They are actually still in stock at the Scrapyard site and have a 7 inch recurve blade. For some reason the 7 inch nonrecuve on the Camp Tramp is worth more than twice as much?

I have had both the DF and the Hookguard and much prefer the Hooker. I sold the DF.

Damn, that is nice, almost too nice to use though. That is the thing with these blades, the finish doesn't hold up well to major abuse and that knife is built to chop, I would almost prefer having a satin finished user and have that muddy as my safe queen
