The newbie question thread!

What I'd like to do here is establish a thread that has the answers to typical newbie questions, like "plain or serrated?" and similar stuff.

To maintain a clear structure, every one of the common topics should be represented by a list of at least five informative threads on the respective subject. "Informative" means that there's little to no thread drift and more than just a few replies.

Please post topics you'd like to see included in this post. It would also be helpful if you submit good threads on these subjects. I will edit this post to include them, so the information is available "on the spot" so to speak - and of course I will give proper credit for the submissions.

The purpose of this thread would be to link to it whenever a question included in this post comes up. This isn't supposed to stop further discussion on a subject, but mainly to provide the guy asking for information with a wealth of additional knowledge. He doesn't have to search for the right keywords and search options when looking for it and he doesn't have to wade through threads that went off-topic.

Maybe it will become a "sticky" after a while.
I'm not sure if this would be a real FAQ because the questions included here are not necessarily the most basic ones, but those who come up most frequently.

I'll start with one topic that came up a couple of days ago:

What are the advantages/disadvantages of tanto blades?

Can I kill a shark with this knife???

I Like your idea QS, however the search function has worked well for me, all but completely destroyed my credit cards.
Maybe a sticky - "how to use the Search Tool" for all the tools who can't work it out.

I'm a big advocate of the Search tool myself, but it's not perfect. Type "Best blade steel" in there and see what happens. I think a FAQ sticky is a good idea to fill in what the Search might not.

I think a glossary of terms and abbreviations/acronyms would be a good idea too. There's a few good term glossarys out there, but it couldn't hurt to make our own (or at least link to the good ones). An abbreviation/acronym database would be very helpful IMO (in my opinion ;) ). BM, MT, EDC, Ti, SAK, 710, etc. To someone new to the forum and the knife world, so much of this must seem like gibberish to them.

Type "steel -cold", select "Search Titles Only" and specify the Blade Discussion Forum. Not perfect, but not too much to keep you from sorting the threads out that pertain to your query.

But I guess a "how to use the search engine" would possibly a better idea. I'll compile one and post it here when I'm finished.

Edit: you can find it here!

Can you right-handed, wrong-footed backcut with a 2.5 kerambit in pikal contrasted to icepick? [blade reversed, of course!! I’m not a complete n@@b!]

Oops! this should be posted under training….my bad.

Who makes the best flashlight?

Ooops, I just realized I committed two unforgiveable sins. :(

1. Trolling.
2. Wrong forum

Search engine ? it's one of them new hybrid things ,it searches back and forth trying to figure should it go gas or electric.
