Any guess when or if spyderco will introduce contoured G10 scales on popular models like the PM2, Military, Delica, and Endura? *I know spyderco has some contoured scales but there mainly on larger, clunkier knives. I can only think of a couple negatives. One being a little costlier to produce. A little harder clip placement. Lastly said knife would be slightly thicker. To me for the feel of contoured scales out weight the negatives. Any thoughts?

There is a viewpoint that with flatter handles and angled handle edges you have a more tactile feel for where the knife is oriented in space at all times. Less conscious thought or manipulation of your grip. I don't know if that's Spyderco's reasoning.

I doubt it's in the works or that it will be any time soon, but I wouldn't mind it.

Contoured, fluted g10 Military? Sign me up! As long as it's not black.

There is a larger Native in the works called the Shaman and it will have contoured scales and a comp lock. The Pattada also has contoured scales. So does the fluted Military and the fluted Native.

I agree. I would love a Para2 with contoured scales.

Two or three years ago on the Amsterdam Meet there was a PM2 with contoured carbon fiber handles, a special grippy surface, and nicely rounded edges.
Literally a real joy to handle, but so far i've never seen it into production.

I'd love to see contoured scales like the fluted military and native in G10 minus the ribbing. It seems like a no brainer.

I've never heard that before, all I know is contoured scales feel so nice in the hand to me.

I wouldn't mind contoured scales but I'm not interested in sacrificing the thinness of the overall knife. I truly appreciate how the thinness of a spyderco allows the knife to sit flat in my pocket and particularly inside my waistband. It's the flatness that makes them sit so comfortably. Reminds me of carrying a gun - jframes are great carry guns but they pale in comparison to modern single stack semi autos due to the thinness of the semi auto - this compared the the bulge of the revolvers cylinder. YMMV though.

If spyderco came out with contoured G10 scales on the military and PM2 tomorrow with no other changes I would guess that would out sell the regular models by a very large margin. Visually they look nicer (to me) and eyes closed they feel nicer. Like I said seems like a no brainer to me but I may be missing something?

I'd love to see it. The tension is between comfort during extended use and comfort in pocket. I'm honestly not bothered by even huge, very clunky folders, so I'm all for contoured handles.

I completely agree with the gun scenario, but with a knife like a military or PM2 how much of a difference are we talking? A 1/16" I don't know I'm asking. If it's that little then I say it's not going to bother me. Does anyone not cary a fluted contoured native or military because it's to bulky? Your looking at a fluted military or native with the ribs polished off and G10 as opposed to Ti.

Check out some custom scales, that should scratch the itch

I won't, but everyone is different. I like the comment above regarding the tension being between carry comfort and usage comfort. It's really about where you place your priorities. I personally haven't had any issues with the flatter scales but have had issues with comfort in the pocket or waistband. I figure, the knife spends much more time in my waistband than in my hand cutting things so that's what I'm placing as a higher value. Again, I can understand someone liking a more contoured grip, and there are times I like them too, but in the aggregate I prefer the flatter scales. This combined with a lightweight piece and good steel make for edc perfection. It's why I'm so impressed with the Manix LW. Aww, who am I kidding, if Sal put something with a contoured scale out I know I would consider it - it truly is a sickness. ;)

Fair enough.

I think if I had to compare, for example, the Halpern MULE scales. The contoured do look better & feel good in hand, but I would still choose the flat scales after having used both. I think there's better feel and control. I do like contoured that are still basically flat, the Southfork.

Oh man, I would love to have some 3D machined G10 like on the Pattada

I think contoured scales would be popular. Spyderco does make them on other models, for instance this is one of the nicer features of the Vallotton. I found information online that the PM2 handle is 0.46" thick. I had a knife model with contoured scales from another brand and I found information online that its width was 0.60". It did seem a bit thicker than the PM2 but it was oval shaped and still seemed relatively thin so I think it is possible for the PM2 and Military. Someone mentioned Halpern- the Halpern 3D scales are relatively fat and round. I think this shape would be too wide for a folder.
