I recently bought this NMFBM and figured it was time to break her in :D

No turning back now

The first one was easy, let's move on to something a little thicker.

And here are the after shots, once I wiped it down.

What is the black layer under the coating?

The tip looks great, maybe there is a satin finish hiding under the coating

Some quick thoughts:
I absolutely love the coloration of this knife. The bama clay texture is rough and gritty, having a sand paper feel to it. The micarta handles feel great in my hand. The fusion handle is my favorite of all the Busse designs. At 11.5” the blade is perfect for batoning and gives you plenty of room for chopping. It bites deep and has a nice forward balance to it. This one is a hair over 0.28" on my calipers.

Does anyone know the history of the bama clay coloration? I know it's not offered anymore, why did it go away?

No safe queens! I like it. I only wish that I had access to a bunch of logs. City life.....

My pal that encouraged me to be a Busse blade snob cuts oaks and sells it as fire wood. I buy wood from him to pound knives through. It's nice and knotty and will really put a knife to the test. Maybe you can get some wood that way?

I'm sure that I could find some if I didn't work 60 hour weeks and I tried. Mostly what keeps me from having such fun are the SHEEPle that would give me weird looks for even owning a blade longer than 3". Let alone a NMFBM doublecut with green g10. That's just craaaaaazy...... ;) I'll live vicariously for now. Let us know what's under that coating, ya?

Yeah I want to know to. In my opinion, the blade pictured above looks better with the coating rubbed off.

Yes I agree, definitely looks better with some wear on the coating.

I've got a few more logs to split for this weekend, I'm hoping a lot more will come off. :D

Does anyone know what the dark gray layer under the coating is? Is that decarb?

Looks darker than decarb I've seen on my strippers. It might be a chemical conversion coating, that improves the adhesion of that funky 'Bama stuff.

Wow, what I beast! Cool blade--looks great with all that character. The decree definitely looks darker--almost like another full black coating... but Resinguy is likely right. Love the pics.

If true, that could be why there's no more Bama Clay. An extra step for no extra $.

I think you're correct. I found a picture of one that Al posted in the exchange a few years back. It looks like the undercoating is pretty tough stuff.

Nothing better than a Mistress in her post work-out gear!!! ;)

Congrats W-457!!!
