Been a couple months since i got a new becker in the mail, but it looks like i will have a new addition next week :) I struggled in choosing between a BK10 or a BK5 in a trade.

I was all set to go with the BK10... But the other day my wife was making ribs and said I need a longer knife for chopping thru bones and stuff.... Then today she asked if she could use one of my longer blades in the kitchen for some watermelon... so its settled, the BK5 would be more useful, my wife might steal it until i get her the becker kitchen knives, that is if the sale is still going on the 1st, if not i might not ever get to use the 5 LMAO

I always considered the BK5 the oddball of the Becker line-up, but it looks like the oddball is coming straight to home plate!

Feel free to post up some pictures or list your favorite uses of the BK5.

Hey WW. The BK5 and BK15 are surprisingly versatile. Probably Christine's favorites. Just need to use them more - lol!

Finally some love, I thought the oddball would get ignored lmao.

I made the mistake of showing the wife the kitchen knives too, she told me keep the bk5 but i better get her that set lmao

No denying that the kitchen set is more suitable for pure kitchen use, but I bought the 5 earlier this year and have been completely impressed with how well it transitions between kitchen duty and more rugged outdoor activities. The 15 is just as effective - only in a smaller package.

Lmao i was... But my wife changed that, And then she told me she wants the kitchen knives anyway lmao WOMEN.......

Bk-5 is an awesome knife! I never liked it till I actually held it in my hand. Didn't think I would ever buy one and now I have 2!!
And the looks on the family's face last year when I busted it out to carve the Thanksgiving turkey was priceless!!

BK-5 is a sleeper in the Becker line. No one gives it much thought but this blade can accomplish many many tasks. But everyone who gets one absolutely loves it!

Great pictures!

Yea i have wanted every BK knife from the start except the 5 and the 15. Just not really my thing, but I will see if i have a use for it before long! If not it might be headed to another beckerhead that spends more time in the kitchen, or camp cooking than i do!

I use my BK5 more than any of my other 10 Beckers combined! Lol
I love everything about it. Awesome knife!

love me some BK5

just gave one to a buddy for his 55th. he LIKES IT.

heh...

Let's see. Starting fires?

Yep, it makes feathersticks and batons just fine, although I usually only baton 3-4" thick wood or less, just in case. The swedge throws plenty of sparks off a ferro rod.

Chop wood?

Yes, it can be done. Not as well as a 9, of course, but it'll do in a pinch.

Camp cooking? Probably the most used Becker knife for prepping food. I have no pics of that, though.

Brush clearing? Oh yeah. Any light brush and thin green woods don't stand a chance against the 5.

Woodcarving? No problem for anything but the smallest detail work. Carves notches pretty well, though not as finely as the 15, but you can do most of the most popular notches with no problems, thanks to the 5's thin grind and choil, which lets you really choke up on the blade.

Self protection? That would be easy with the 5. Sharp as hell and fast in the hand. It even thrusts just fine as long as you use a three-fingered grip and cup the pommel in your palm, which lowers the point and allows for a more accurate thrust.

It's just a good knife.

Not much I can add to wasatchdan's post. This thing is a sleeper. Get one and I doubt you'll ever regret it.

If i decide to keep it i will get some scales for it! My wife made me pick it but then changed her mind lmao so ill have to see if it fits me. The looks of it throws me off, but like you guys say i may just fall in love when it hits my hands!

Normally i prefer micarta on my users, but a knife like this that i feel would be used on food a lot....id get g10. I wouldnt want blood soaked into my micarta.

That's exactly what happened to me. I kept hearing what a nice knife the 5 was, but was a little ambivalent to it until I got it in my hand. Then I fell in love with it, especially after I used it for a while. That choil makes it balance very nicely in the hand. You can carve wood for hours with that thing and barely feel it. I've done just that before, as my brother and I used our Beckers to carve toy knives for the kids in camp.

And the reason my 5 got the G-10 scales was because it gets used to prep food a lot. Those TKC G-10 scales are absolutely perfect for the 5.
