Well, it's been awhile since Dan posted that info and I was wondering how they were holding up for those of you that built them.

Mine hit the 2 year mark yesterday. Still going strong. There are no dust covers anymore, no nylon stockings, just a fan mounted on the shaft. It's all open baby.

Of course I'm still waiting for the day that it blows up and kills my dog and burns down the house and releases deadly viruses in my home town. Then I'll buy a real motor. Until then I'll keep grinding.

mines fine :D :D :D

my buddy has been busy putting the contolers/motors together since I asked him to fix mine. He just sold a motor setup to a guy useing it on convor belt.

Could you post a link to the original thread?

Thanks in advance.

Since then, I've upgraded the motor twice...first time to a 110V VFD controller and 3-phase motor. Then to a 220V VFD controller.

For all the naysayers out there that said "just buy it pre-made"....

Pbbbblllttttt....!

:D

Seriously, though....I made enough money from the knives to pay for the upgrades.

It was definitely a good stepping stone to get into a KMG relatively cheap and start making knives and $$$.

There are still a few more out there who did the same....hope to hear from them too.

Thanks for bringing this back up again, and thanks to Sando for bugging me to write it up in the first place.

Daniel,

re: 220V AC motor & controller

Yeah baby!!!! That's the way to go. Someday when I'm all grown up I'm gonna upgrade.

However, right now I'm coveting a mini-mill.

Steve

I hear ya on the mini-mill.....that one is starting to cause more pain than waiting to get the metal bandsaw did....

Well, I gotcha both beat. I still need a KMG, a heat-treat oven, a milling machine, and a press!! So ha! :D

wait a minute, that sucks. :(

My grinder has the electrics that Dan had posted in his "shoestring" thread. I'm sure that I don't use the machine as much as many makers use theirs, but she's running good. Also the machine is a blatant ripoff from Rob's KMG, I call it an MMG, (Mickey Mouse Grinder), Mike Spangler calls it a "Mighty Mouse Grinder". LOL!

As Steve, my machine has no protection from metal and abrasive debris from the grinder, nor does it have a fan, but so far, no a problem, (knock on wood).

I reckon that when I eventually upgrade, I'll use the existing motor for some other application.

Yes, and I did get the HF Mini Mill, all I gotta do is re-arrainge my basement, weld together a table, etc. etc. before I can run it.

Now why can't I crack the case on my Grizzly and hook all this mumbo-jumbo up the the motor in there? (me electrically inept. :D )
Michael,
That VS speed setup is DC , as you know the Grizz is AC. There are ways to run the Grizz with adjustable/variable speed. First you'll need to pull that big hunkin' motor off (though not strictly necessary as you'll see in a link) and use it for a buffer or another grinder. Then check out these links:

Nice links -- it should would be nice for them to put out a variable-speed model. It would sell like hot-cakes.

When I go, it's going to be KMG all the way. :D
