I was working and going through the old toolbox trying to find some allen wrenches and I came across an old Storz beer churhkey.

Being born in 1980 (yeah I'm a youngin) I haven't had the opurtunity to really use one.

So I guess my question is, Is there still use for this item in any situation or least another country that doesn't have pop tops?

are you talking about the styles that punches the triangular hole in the can or the the type that has the loop for opening bottles and the little lift hook for un sealing cans and masons jar lids? I carry the loop and pribar in my pocket all the time, My prefered beer does not come with a twist off top.

Yeah the one that has the little bottle opener side, and the triangular punch on the other end to punch into cans.

Even earlier beer bottles had a ceramic 'cork' with rubber gasket held by a wire cam type device. No opener needed.

I guess I'm dating myself, I remember when you needed to use a church key to open your beer. I have an old one that is engraved with the Hamm's beer logo. I keep it as a memento of another time.

I own a few; one with a magnet on the fridge, one on my desk, and one in the shop...along with a Sam Adams wall mounted opener.

As far as I can tell their only useful for opening bottles (and cans if it has the other triangular side)...mine seem to be made from a light steel, so prying is out of the question. And they are too fat to really get under anything.

Can also be used as a can opener, by punching a series of touching traiangles into the top.

Time consuming, but effective.

Can't hurt to have a backup opener, and it doesn't take up much space or add too much weight.

I use them to pull staples out of stuff.;) Bring one to work and see if it won't come in handy.:D

Grolsch bottles still do, they are resealable. A friend's mom has him save them for her, for homemade Irish Cream and other things.

I agree the opener you're talking about is handy for it's weight. Back-up can opener, you betcha it works. Staples and tacks, heck yeah I've done that. Oil cans big juice cans and beer bottles, yup. Stoves/candle lanterns, done that too. Somewhere on the net I'm sure there's a story about someone using one to scratch the daylights out of an attacker, lol.

If you want something more heavy duty, hardware stores carry small 6" or so wonder-bars for prying/pulling nails/bashing on things. One of those would work I think. More of a car-camping item, probably wouldn't want to carry one around all day.

I have a damascus churchkey that Jon Christensen made for the ABS Raffle in Reno a couple of years ago.Matt Diskin purchased it and when we were talking at dinner he gave it to me.One of my treasures.
randy

I use one for canned milk and large cans of juice. Some types of broth still come in cans w/o a pull top.
