Over the years, I've had favorite EDC knives that I've stayed with for varying periods of time. Yes, my collection is locked in a safe, and I've got the knives I regularly carry now, but there's a drawer where my old favorites, a little scratched and worn, finally reside when I know I'm rarely going to carry them.

In pawing through the box last night, I came across my Russell One Hand Knife from '88. Nice knife, very slim, easy to sharpen. I carried it until a gremlin snagged it away for a few years, then returned it out of nowhere one day several years later. I put a little torque on the blade, watched the lock approach failure mode and shuddered a little. I doubt I'll carry that one again.

Next was a Kershaw Talon, very smooth, titanium scales, teflon-coated bearings. But the steel is now low-tech, it's a b#@ch to sharpen, it doesn't do cardboard all that well, not does it hold an edge. It taught me that combo edges on small blades don't work all that well for anything. It's just not a state-of-the-art EDC.

Here was my Spydie Co-Pilot. That was a frequent flyer with me until 9/11. Nice knife, but now that it's grounded, why bother?

How about you folks out there? What's in your old EDC box?

;)
