Stopped by a local garage sale last weekend and the husband and wife team had taken a break to go inside and cool off it was nearly 95degrees. When the old timer saw me out the back door browsing around he yelled to me " whatever your lookin fur I got it". He very slowly made his way out to me and said " well whats it that your after youngster" . I kindly replied, Knives sir pocket knives. He told me to have a seat next to him because he needed to tell me a story. He started by telling me he just turned 85 years old and he didint want to move out of this house but his wife was worried that he keeps getting lost around town. Either way at first he seemed a little lost telling some off the wall stories and such but I listened patiently as I was raised to respect my elders. He told stories for a good half hour or so and I didint get a word in edge wise but it didint matter I was smiling the whole time enjoying the stories. Then finally he said what was it you were after again and I replied again knives.
he said yes I have over a thousand or so which I thought was maybe another memory loss or a streched story but he told me to follow him. went to the front porch and there it was at least 1000 knives. The old man had been telling the truth the whole time. There was some junk and some case some schrades a little bit of everything but he said he started buying a knife or so a month since he was in his thirtys. He had lots of advertising knives coke, pepsi. seed corn and such. I asked what he wanted for just some of them and he said he only wanted $4000.00 for all of them. Wow I said I dont have that much but I would buy a few and he said he didint want to break them up just yet but maybe in a few weeks. I didint walk away with a single knife but I sure did enjoy listening to the stories and him letting me look through the knives. I think he may of enjoyed it more and he asked me to stop by again some time to talk knives and what not. Im planning to go see him again real soon. Just thought it made for a good storie and I had to tell some guys I thought might appreciate it. -Joel

That is a great story for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that you listened respectfully to the ramblings of an elder, who turned out not to be rambling at all.

I had a similar encounter with an 81 year old man, who decided it was time for him to emancipate his restored 1969 Chevy truck. Its now in my garage. I'll admit to paying well more than that knife collection cost. :p

Again, great story. I like that knife-a-month plan he's been on.

PS: next time you see 1000 knives in one place, whip out the cell phone camera and share it with us.

right on

Nice story Joel, at 4 bucks a knife I would mortgage the farm to get them. It sounds like he enjoyed your company, and no matter what the outcome I'm sure he has lots of good old knife related stories. You can't beat the wisdom of someone that has been around for 85 years.

Joel, if I had to guess I would say that the gentleman was testing you. And you were deemed worthy. Congratulations.

Great story Joel!
The people I meet knife collecting are usually as interesting as the knives.
