My Dad pretty much refuses to carry a knife other than a stanley tool in his truck. I have suggested several knives to him but he doesn't show much interest. Any idea on some knives that might work for him? It needs to be tough.( he put my custom $nody through 5 bags of landscaping rocks...) and most likely made in the USA. And I don't want to go much over $60 just incase he won't carry it. He drives to different states for work and I think the shortest blade length restriction for any of those is about 3 inches. Any Ideas?

How about a Buck Vantage? COmes in two sizes and variety of steels. USA made and it has a pocket clip, which for my dad (who sounds just like yours) was a real useful thing.

A traditional style knife sounds like the way to go with your dad, Id take a look at a Case Sodbuster. the original beater

I vote for a nice folding/locking box cutter and a 50 pack of bimetal blades. Superknife, Craftsman, and Snap On come to mind (and Stanley).

That is a beautiful knife. That seems like it would fit his personality. only downside is he is a LTC holder and i want something he can also use as a back up.

How bout the plain ol kabar usmc? Hard use knife with plenty of history. He may appreciate that

If that's the case then a fixed blade sounds more appropriate like what rev1cue offered a 1217 will do nicely. And with the 3" blade restriction and us made, the only thing coming to mind is a necker, so BK11 & 14, ESEE Izula 1 & 2, BRKT Necker

Thank you for another great post. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a perfect way of writing? I have a presentation next week, and I am on the look for such information.

get him a spyderco dragonfly-perfect little edc knife and you can really feel the quality of the g10 model

He might like a little Buck 55. Small enough to toss in the pocket and forget about it but tough enough to do a bit o' work, fer sher...

If he's not into knives, then don't bother him with any modern folder. Just go with something cheap and simple. A fixed blade would be best.

- Buck Bucklite MAX Large/Small (Blade length over 3", but other than that, I think it'd be perfect.)
- ESEE Izula
- A.G. Russell Wodswalker
- Scrapyard Scrapivore

If a fixed blade isn't an option for whatever reason, just go with a Sodbuster or SAK. I know they wouldn't work for defensive uses, but if he already has a gun... If you're totally adamant about buying something that could be used defensively, then the Spyderco Delica, Endura, Persistence, and Tenacious would work. So would a Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter, for something less expensive.

Also, while the Becker BK11 and BK14 are great, their blades are slightly over 3".

I'll echo Brets-FTW comment about the sodbuster. Some older guys just aren't too terrible enthusiastic about more modern knives and often opt for more traditonal ones. Another good traditional beater is the French Douk-Douk wich are tough as nail and very nostalgic.
