Heres the deal: you need a knife that you can trust with whatever you may need it for. One you can carry in the city without drawing attention (I'll exclude the legal ramifications for the purposes of this thread), will stand up to utility use, won't crap out on you in harsh conditions, may possibly be needed to defend yourself with (just incase), and will be well rounded in terms of different tasks knives are used for. Lets just say you can't carry a fixed blade because it might be too obvious and too cumbersome for continuous carry. I know that there is no one knife that will do everything perfectly, but since you can only carry one, it has to be able to do most things at least exceptionally, and be trusted in terms of durablity. Bottom line: When you need ONE folder/auto you can trust, that you know wont fail you, what would you choose? A Severtech, Dalton, Spyderco, or Strider? Or maybe you're partial to an emerson with with a wave function? What knife would you choose if you could only carry one that you could trust with your life?

I carried a Spyderco Police for over ten years, and replaced it with a SERE 2K last year. Either knife seems to do a good job. I can't see myself replacing the SERE 2K for years.

If I replaced my EDC folder too regularly I'd have to buy Busse and Chris Reeve fixed blades less frequently, and that just isn't going to happen.

Well, I only own one folder and that is a large classic sebbie, it gets carried EDC. However I CAN carry a FB of my choosing as long as it's concealed. For that, one of 3 smaller Busse's are on the other side of the belt. I just have a hard time trusting ANY folder that completely and would hate to be put in that position.

If I was, I'd want a 'tank' also.

Let me go more into detail. Say your in a second or third world country, are travelling light, can't carry a fixed blade, and you dont want to get caught in a situation where your knife cant stand up to the task at hand. If you have a concealed FB and the local authorities search you, it could look very bad and you might end up in some rat-hole prison. A folder if found, would probably be easier to pass of as a tool rather than a weapon, but it has to be one that won't fall apart after continuous hard use. I'm talking about a knife that can be carried in the city as well as the country, and if you had a rambo blade with you, things could be very difficult. I know that a folder pales in comparison to a FB for heavy use, but you can't carry a FB with you everywhere. I need something tough and reliable, yet smaller and more discreet than a FB. Thanks :)

well, most folks would probably mention a Strider, but some of your "rules" exclude it, as it is not very discreet.

that said, i'll go with 806d2 aka AFCK.

By discreet I dont mean totally concealed, I just mean something that doesn't scream LOOK AT ME IVE GOT A KNIFE. From reading other posts, it seems alot of the guys think a Fer De Lance or Severtech are nice and tough, dunno how being autos would affect their utility use...lol I'm quite the newbie as you can probably tell. I'm just looking for something I can use over and over and over and not worry about having to buy some POS in Islamibad (lol or wherever my travels might take me) cuz my only folder broke. :p

I carried a lot of expensive, and not so expensive knvies as EDCs over the years. But one day I came across the Kershaw Vapor II and thought "hmmm, Kershaw makes good knives, let's see what their less expensive knives are like." It's been in my pocket ever since... while some very nice knives that I paid three tiems as much for (or more) sit collecting dust.

It's been through hell, the blade is scratched and I just replaced the washers, but it'll take a razor edge and keep it for a long time with just some minor work on a steel.

Noone goes with a severtech? I guess their relatively less expensive model comes only in a tanto point...or maybe their not all theyre cracked up to be...hmmm. For some reason the Spartan beckons me like a scanily clad cheerleader

Well, my actual choice for that role is the Camillus Aftermath, but I suspect some people would consider it too large to be socially acceptible. My second choice would be the Spyderco Chinook II or Manix.

Microtech manual SOCOM or if a custom my My Tighe, both are strong, sharp and stay that way. My SOCOM would probably have the edge just because it has seen a lot more miles with me and has never failed no matter what abuse it has been through.

Locking Blades are illegal (as weapons) in most countries. An Endura is jailbait just as much as a Bowie. In some places, a small FB is legal but a locking folder the same size or smaller is a "weapon" IIRC. (Ever wonder why some cops scoff at the "safety feature" aspect of locking knives:() In England, again IIRC, Even an Opinel in illegal due to its locking blade.

In Japan, I used a Spyderco Pride, ~2" blade, nonlocking.

Other than that, I use Cold Steel and highly recommend Spyderco. But I've never paid over $50 for a knife. Reason: In the USMC, I travelled alot and always had a risk of loss or confiscation. Even on base, someone might say "no pocket knives" because one idiot was stupid.

But if I was ever to be deployed to the Sandbox, I would have a CS Trailmaster bowie sent to me via UPS OVERNIGHT. ;)

Well I've been scavenging this site, and reading your answers to my thread, and beleive the term you guys use for the kind of knife I'm looking for is a "tank". The most common choice seems to be Strider, while some prefer Severtechs, and others still list knives that I think are probably too small for what I'm looking for. Some of you have raised good points over carrying a not so expensive folder in my travels so I don't get royally burned if it gets lost or confiscated. Some folder choices that appeal to me, in descending order of beef are : Severtech, Microtech LUDT, and a Rat trap or manix. It would royally suck if I bought a 500 dollar Spartan and got it jacked by the police in a foreign country, so maybe I should leave the nice ones at home and bring a cheaper model. thanks for the input.

This is an easy one....Either a one hand Swiss Army Knife, or a Chris Reeve Sebenza.

If you want something cheap and very functional have a look at the Ka-Bar Mule.

I've been using one round the farm for the last few months, and it's very good for the $.

David

It would be the same knife I'm EDC'ing for a couple of years now. A Spyderco SE Delica. It is lightweight, reliable and has a good steel.
