I had seen One bottles Become increasingly popular with local hikers and I see them for sale everywhere so I asked myself "are they useful for more than just a fancy water bottle?"That's what I set out to find out.
I bought a 700ML stainless One bottle. The cap is black plastic with a gasket to prevent leaking. The cap is looped so a carribiener can be fitted through and hung off of a belt or pack.
I wanted to see if in a survival situation you could boil water in one.Now I know what your thinking,It's a steel bottle why couldn't you boil water in one?Well my reasoning for this test isn't very scientific I just wanted to see if it could take the heat.
So my "lab" was a rocky river bank in some nameless Vally about 5 K from my house.Seemed like a good place for water.I took my bandanna off and used it as a filter and filled the bottle 3/4 of the way and hung it over my small fire.I also used the little tripod as a drying rack.multi tasking is the survivors way is it not?
it wasn't too long before I could smell the clear coat burning off the outside of the bottle but little bubbles were starting as the water heated up.
With the bottle looking good and crispy steam started to pipe out of the top of the bottle.
I peaked inside and sure enough the water was boiling.
The bottle looked and smelled like hell when I was done but it did survive the boiling.I took it down to the water and used some sand to scrape off most of the charred stuff and make it look like steel again. The lid still fit like it did when I bought it so there was no warping at all.I laid the hot bottle in the brook for a bit as I packed up and by the time I was ready to leave the water and bottle were cool enough to put straight in my bag without any worry.
So a One bottle can be used to boil water but can it be used as a fire bundle? That I'll find out next time.
