Long before I owned a Hinderer I came across a picture of a custom Slicer posted by Rob O. I was so impressed by it that it was the screen saver on my computer for over a year. That was the knife that started it all for me. That was my grail and the start of my Hinderer obsession. I never actually thought I'd own one. Thank you Brad, Ross, Justin, Dave, oldbugr, RHK, and Steel Flame for helping me attain my grail.

So the question is, what is the knife that started it all for you? What knife drew you to RHK? Weither you have tracked it down or not let's see them. :D

My first custom knife. Handrubbed Flashover with an ivory insert. Met Rick at a knife show in Dover,Ohio and we talked for about an hour. He had a few Flashovers on his table. I ordered this shortly after. 13 years ago maybe? I dunno, maybe more.

First (several Firsts) First Hinderer (had a different scale) first purchase from an online source of anything, first thing I ordered from RHK which was a joy - the Scale, First call to Rob (panic) didn't have a spanner tool. Realized that on the way home from the post office after going to pick up the scale. First disassembly/reassembly of an XM.
Anyway..... all the rest is a blur :)

Mike that flashover is incredible! Very cool.

Rubi that's a great story behind your first! Great knife too my friend. :)

Some great stories here gents! Keep em coming! And great idea Jensen!!

Well the evil known as the interweb is what started it all, and actually here on BF and the green site is what did it, browsing around and coming across these badass blades.... After that it was all down hill from there... Haha! As you all know :D I never seen a custom Hinderer that sparked it for me, it was just the plain jane spanto XM-18 that did it!! Man I was pumped when I got it!! Never thought I'd own or even fathom a custom... That's why I didn't really care for em too much... And now look what the sickness has done to me...

But here she be, the first one....

Great thread idea! Excellent blades up there ^^^^^ fellas!!

My first was a gift from the wife several birthdays ago and is of course still with me today. A friend of mine helped her buy it off the forum before I was even a member. The story started with my gym/gun buddy carrying his XM-24 into the locker room and handing it to me "check this out" one random day - at the time I had a ZT0300 and couldn't imagine spending more than that on a knife - even spending the 0300 cost had me feeling crazy - until the moment I held the XM-24 in my hand and flipped it open once.... GAME OVER! The quality was apparent from the first moment and it flipped with authority, I knew I had to have one. Luckily my wife asked my friend for gift ideas as she had often done in the past with guns and the result is my below reigning favorite knife that will always hold that title.

Dang BW, there is something about that knife I like.......not sure what it is but, I like it. ;)

Back when I first really got into knives, I liked black, partially serrated, and flippers (yeah, I think you know where I am going with this...). The assisted flipper novelty wore off, and I really liked the design and function of the XM-18, but I hadn't spent even close to what one went for. After finally breaking down and scoring a production flipper, I has hooked. Not long after, the SWAT was revealed. I HAD to have one! So while a fully stonewashed production 3.5" flipper may have started it (and is my work edc), the SWAT took it to the next level.

N2K your textured bronze Ti really caught my eye initially, then meeting Rick and Rob at the NYCKS several years ago and handling several there sold me, I had to have one, then another, then . . . I never experienced that feel in a folding knife, then of course BT with his Zurich SWAT brought me to a new level of appreciation of what Rick was capable of making.

I'll happily take any blame you guys throw at me for encouraging your Hinderer acquisitions. That 24 of mine is not only my first, but if pushed to choose just one...it's my favorite knife. It's not a standard piece as it was picked up at BS '11. The blade is kinda WF but not exactly like the other WF finishes of new or old...and at the time I scored it, bronze ano. wasn't too common at all in production XMs. The bronze Ti scale; oh, the bronze textured Ti scale...it is forever "my precious".

Awesome knives and stories, guys.

awesome custom slicer Jensen! i been waiting for the photos! :D good job as always

nice knives and stories everybody!

this subform is what started it for me - great people with good taste in high quality knives and tools - and not to forget their photos of awesome hinderer collections! :D

maybe you remember the story when i got my brand new production spanto with od scales this spring and a friend immediately dropped it on the stone floor and broke the tip - i dressed it up a bit in the meantime - but i have yet to order a wicked edge to bring back the tip :D - and never got around to visit the sharpening master either...

I was bumbling and stumbling with knife manufacturers that I like until I found Hinderers. These were both delivered on the same day. Unfortunately I do not still own it, but it was the spark that started my addiction to Rick Hinderer Knives. And I am truly grateful because I have "virtually" met so many great people from The Herd!

Like many......I suppose.......I started with Benchmade, Spyderco and Zero Tolerance.........and they do make great knives.........and then I found CRK...........I was so freakin' nervous spending $350 on a Small Sebenza 21.........but it arrived and I loved it........still have it and will not sell it.
And then one day I stumbled into Hinderers.........saw a pic.......loved it........found the forum.........never looked back..........
The first was a Gen 4 3.5 Slicer with a black G-10 scale that I bought from a dealer because I spent two weeks trying to get one on the forum and always missed out...........and I no longer have that XM either........but what I realized after it arrived was that as much as I loved it.......it was a little on the large side for me to keep in my pocket every day........and then I found the 3" XM..........and that is when I discovered I was pretty much addicted to Hinderers.........

It took me a month to find my first 3" XM.......it was a gorgeous bronze ano'd spanto that I still carry all the time..........as you can tell from the dirt.......

And I collected 3" XM for quite a while........and was very happy........until Jensen convinced me to buy a custom.........and I resisted for a short time........but Jensen kept sending me postings for my favorite blade.......a 3" Spearpoint.........and finally.......one day........I caved..........

And that was pretty much it.........I found Hinderer.........got one........got addicted.........got a custom........got addicted.........yet again.........and it has been a hugely fun journey to get where I am now.......and the friends and relationships that have been formed and developed have been one of the best parts of the whole journey.......

Great thread idea, Jensen.........

My first, received it yesterday. This has been a 'grail' knife for me for a year or so. I thought about changing out the scale for some FDE colored ones (to match my Hinderer Investigation pen in FDE), but I think the orange is growing on me. I will probably pick up the Hinderer take down tool, just to have in case I decide to change the scale and when I need to clean it.

National WMD great looking knife and so functional. When Rick made this it was made to go out and use, enjoy carrying and using it, the more you do the more you understand what an XM 18 is all about! I carried an XM 24 with orange scale on my tac vest for a very long time and appreciated its hard use capabilities.
