Just a quick story. I was at a jazz concert with the missus last night. Small venue. About 200 people. There was a meet and greet after the show and CDs were available for signing.

So I get my CD and I stand in the informal autograph line, and everyone is fighting to get the plastic wrap off their CD so it can get autographed. An older woman, looked to be close to 80, finally said, "Does any man here have a pocket knife? I swear, ever since this TSA business no one has a knife anymore!"

I pulled my ebony White Owl out of my pocket and made quick work of her CD packaging. Instantly, CDs were being handed to me to slice open.

200 people and I was the only guy with a knife.

I know I didn't save anyone's life, or anything cool like that, but--

It was a good EDC moment.

Not only a knife to pull out, but a cool one to boot!

Well played.

I know what you mean... 200 people and noone carrys a knife. That´s sad. But it´s good, that you have had one :)

Thank you for sharing this!

Kind regards

Hi Subspace -

I had a similar experience recently when my wife and I saw Jim Gaffigan and got to meet him after the show for a meet and greet.

We had received two new dvds and needed to open them for autographs.

I had with me my Kershaw Tilt SW and my Vic Waiter. I pulled out my waiter and opened the dvds, but I did not make any show of it and did not offer to open any others. I did not want to create a fuss and possibly upset the promoter or handlers etc.

I was surprised I did not get stopped about the Tilt when I entered the venue. I had forgotten to leave it in my truck.

best

Yep thats usually me. and everyone complains until i'm the guy they're all turning to when they have a package to open or a string to cut and what not.

This goes back to way before 9/11, but when I was building dock on the lakes of South Carolina to finance my graduate studies I always had my Victorinox Fieldmaster on me. The guys on my crew liked to make fun of me for carrying it, calling me Boy Scout. But they all came running to me for my tweezers when they got splinters (which was often, and the pressure treated wood splinters really burn!).

It never ceases to amaze me how many people dont have a knife. Course im from a small town. Great story. Thanks for sharing!

Well I'm in the big metropolis, and it gets even worse. I know very few people who carry any sort of knife in the Washington D.C. area.

About 5 years ago I moved to a small Redneck town here in Tn. and you can actually see across town and I really believe everybody "Male - Female and Kids around the age of 13 or so carry a knife and as far as I know ~~ nobody has ever had a Knife fight in this town --- but then most of the "Men" carry Guns also.
So why pull a knife when you know you are going to get shot.!* lol

Not long ago I was at a friend's birthday party. Her mom was having trouble getting the cake box open so being nearby I handed her my yellow peanut. She easily opened the box and handing it back said, I'm glad you're here, my Dad (the grandpa) would like you for carrying a knife. Made me feel good to be complimented like that and made eating that cake a whole lot easier.

Must be the way my brain is wired.... I just can't conceive the idea of NOT having a pocketknife. Kinda makes me a little "smug" to be the only one in the room with something proper to cut with. "Times, they are a changin'"

It was a Jane Monheit show. Not to get off topic, but I recommend her.
It was kind of sad to see grown men hacking away at plastic wrap with car keys.

That is a good story. Last Saturday I was at a bar listening to a band with a bunch of friends. We were all around the table and the band put little temporary tattoos on the tables so people can put them on and they put pictures of these people with tatoos on the band's website. A buddy of mine decided he wanted to cut it up 4 ways and put it on his knuckles. There were 15 of us and I was the only one with a knife... The unfortunate part is that I left the house with only my ZT 0550 in my pocket...It was seriously the only time I left my house without either my sodbuster Jr or my stockman since I got them... I took out the 0550 and handed it to him. Sure, it worked great but some guy said "what are you gonna do with that, field dress a deer?" I will never leave home again without my stockman or sodbuster jr (or some other traditional). Sometimes in public, it is just better to keep a folder like the zt0550 in you pocket.

luls the other day i bought a case large stockman and right after my mom got through nagging me about spending 60 bucks on a knife she was struggling to open a dvd case, she then looked at me i Just smiled and said "nope"

Unfortunately that is the way it has become in today's society.

it used to be that you got funny looks for not carrying a knife, talk about a change of tides.
