The only two PM2s I have with nested liners are impossible to unscrew at the pivot.

I just bought a very expensive pair of MetonBoss scales, and was hoping to put them on a S45 PM2. I also ordered a Maxamet PM2 for some wooden scales. The problem is, neither pivot will budge. I thought a couple of years ago Spyderco stopped using red loctite on their knives? It could be my Husky tool, as I busted one off trying to unscrew my aluminum BD1N clip screw off, but this tool is not busting, it just is not working at all. Tried hot water and a hair dryer as well as tapping it a few times. I really hope this isn't just the way it is.

Use a soldering iron - once hot, hold it against the screw and give it a minute or two for the heat to radiate. And use Wiha or Were torx

You didn't have Wiha, fancy scales, or PM2s to put them on until recently... The lack of a soldering iron is remedied just as easily as those other deficiencies. Of course, you can risk stripping or breaking the screw, and pay more than the cost of a soldering iron to get that fixed.
(A little harsh, I know...but the truth hurts sometimes. Wait til you get your new scales on & can't get rid of the blade play without tightening the pivot so much it kills the action)

Dude, and now the purp/blue finish on the 150 dollar scales I bought is rubbing off. Crazy. I really hope Knifecenter will deal with this.
Maybe I don't need to customize my PM2s so much. God, today was hell over this.

You said you tried hot water, what does that mean ? That you ran it under a faucet until the water was as hot as it could be ? Typically, hot water from a faucet is 120 degrees. Have you boiled water and then put the pivot in the boiling water for a few minutes? Boiling water is 210 degrees

How to Remove Stubborn Screws from a Knife

According to the manufacturers of Loctite 263, the red Loctite used on Spyderco’s US-made knives, screws treated with it can be removed by applying heat. However, its specifications state that a temperature of more than 360 degrees Fahrenheit must be reached for it to soften. Such temperatures could easily damage the scales and other components of your knife. Instead, we recommend the following process:

1) Ensure that you have the proper size Torx® driver for your screws and that the driver head is in good condition. A single-piece, screwdriver-style driver works best.
2) Place your knife on a workbench or other hard surface. Use a paper towel or rag to protect the handle from scratches.
3) Insert the tip of the Torx driver into the screw head and ensure that it fits properly.
4) Tap the handle of the driver several times with a hammer to “shock” the screw and break the Loctite bond.
5) Maintain a firm, constant, downward pressure on the Torx driver as you rotate it to remove the screw.
6) If this method is not successful on the first try, repeat as necessary or return your knife to Spyderco with $5.00 for return shipping. We will loosen your knife’s screws upon request.

Man, the scales, the blue and purple that was so vibrant and why I bought it, is rubbing off instantly, so I'm trying to return them ASAP.
Looks like I have some more time to solve this problem. Just going to wait for my better Torx bit, see if that works. This set coudln't even take off the pocket clip screws.
Then, if that doesn't work, I'll re-try the water stuff.

Cannot believe the MetonBoss fail, though. Would caution anyone thinking of their scales.

Hi Hashishiin, could you post a photo of the scales with the damage pls? I am considering Meton Boss. At least was until now..

You could also try a hair drier? But what Danke posted should work.

Sure thing, going to have a chance to take a pic in light in about four hours.
I was very excited about them, these were gonna be THE scales for me, miles ahead of any other purple/blurple, two different shades that glisten in different angles... as long as you don't touch it ever.

Gonna wait for WiHa and then try these things as soon as I have a pair of scales I can use. I thought these would be fine being TI, the anodized aluminum scales I just bought on the BD1N Spydie are flawless in color.

Tell me what you think of this, one is untouched. Which one seems vibrant, and which one seems duller? I don't know what to think. My girlfriend called attention to the color being just...pushed away, and it is true, even if you can still see the blue and such. Then in the sun when I took this pic (next morning) she says she thinks she was wrong and they're changing/coming back somehow. I think the one still looks totally rubbed off.

If they're titanium anodized, the color can change slightly based on any oils on the surface. Have you tried to wipe the scales with windex or alcohol and see if the color comes back?

I did not know that, I have never used titanium. I guess since I was rubbing it on my finger, it could have been finger oil. Let me try that.

I was wrong, lol. It was somehow my finger oil making it seem like it was dulling the color. The color is fine with some applied windex. Sorry for the scare!
