Own and use a Sharpmaker, so got that covered. What I'd like to know is, are any of the Smith-Gatco-whatevers out there with the V_sticks set-up in a 40, or 30 degree?
I'd like to keep one in the glove and or desk draw for maintaining edges more easily.

Thanks.

IIRC, Sal mentioned a while back that there was a smaller Sharpmaker in development, but I haven't heard anything lately...

Don't know for sure about the others, sorry.

I'm quite happy with my Lansky Turn Box. Inexpensive, good quality, medium and fine rods, 20 or 25 degree settings (per side). Got it from a (how about not advertising non-paying dealers -- see the rules) for $16.

:EDIT: My bad.

AG Russell has two of them. Search www.agrussell.com for "sharpeners" and you'll find one with crock stoicls in a wood base and another with ceramic rods and diamond rods in a plastic case. The second one is what I got, very compact, good field kit.

That's exactly what came to my mind, in reading the OP. I have one of those, and neglected it for a long time after buying it many years ago. I've been reaching for it a lot more in recent months, for very quick touch-ups on any blade (thanks to the included diamond rods). Great little kit. One thing to be aware of, the rod angles are pre-set at one position (30° inclusive) only. I actually prefer that, but if one's edge is wider, some re-bevelling would be necessary to take advantage of it.

It's called the 'A.G. Russell Field Sharpener', appropriately:
