From the Spyderco catalog: "The most awaited mid-sized survival knife of 2004."

Was the Para really designed to be a survival knife? Not that it couldn't be. I guess any knife can be a "survival knife" if it is used in a survival situation. So, is that description just advertisement hype or was the Para specifically designed for survival?

I can't answer that for Sal, but here is my thought on the matter: a survival knife is the knife you have with you when a survival situation occurs. A big, sturdy knife is great to have in that situation, but a pocket sized, light yet strong knife is far more likely to be along for the ride. If I could have any of my knives there in a survival situation, the Para would not be my first choice. But since I always have it with me, it would probably get the call to fill that role when the unexpected happened. I'm sure it would get the job done.;)

I understand what you're saying, yab. I don't see any special feature on the Para that would specifically define it as a survival knife. I didn't know if I was missing something.

Well, it doesn't have a double guard, hollow handle, or a picture of Rambo... ;)

Yes, it is true that it doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles. Sal designed a light, strong, easy to carry (forget it is even in your pocket at times), legal most places folding knife. The kind of knife you carry all the time. The kind of knife that will be in your pocket when the s___ hits the fan. The kind of knife that avoids legal problems, yet is tough enough for self defense. That certainly makes it a survival knife in my book. ;)
