Just for the record, for the posting police, I am not trying to sell anybody anything in this post, so relax.

I am planning on opening a traditional storefront within the next year as a supplement to my online business. I have as yet no ideas about what it will look like. What would you guys like to see in a knife shop, in the way of layout, atmosphere, etc.

All retail establishments should be customer oriented. Think of what you like (and dislike) when you walk into a store. Have fun at your "job" and your customers will have fun too.

I think a knife shop would do well if it did NOT look like every other with flourescent lighting, stainless steel and aluminum, formica, all light and bright. It would be very nice if the place had an older look and atmospher to it; knotty pine paneling, wooden display cases, a few old oversize chairs, maybe a sofa, for relaxed examination of the wares, coffee table full of knife magazines, moose head on the wall, a few mounted fish or critters, big potted plants, etc. you get the idea. Unfortunately all this would be expensive unless you had a lot of time to scour the second hand stores.

This was my idea too, I have been thinking about building some old style wooden display cases. I would want this all to me sort of old fashioned. I don't like flourescent lighting either. I hadn't thought of the chairs though. This place doesn't have to be a high traffic store, since the majority of my business comes from the internet. In a way it is going to be for my own fulfillment.

When you come for the Oregon Show, Visit Northwest Knives and Collectibles in Salem. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any pictures of the retail store on their web site http://www.nwknives.com It's really a wonderful place all done very nicely. The upstairs is a private gallery where Bill exhibits pieces from his private collection that are not for sale.
