The perfect four?

I've kinda been blundering around the Cantina here for a while, and picking scraps and shreds of information and ideas with khuks and such, and I swear it's by complete accident I feel I've aquired the only four khuks I could ever need. They are as follows

Pen Knife- my lightweight hiking general purpose khuk, it's not spectacular at any one task, but it's acceptable for most.

Villager 16.5 inch Chiruwa AK- my favorite and most versatile one, heavy enough to chop, light enough to wear all day, sturdy as hell and nearly indestructible. I especially like showing the PC types the swastika on it, watching them get riled up, and then edgumuckatin' them otherwise.

18 inch WW2- very nicely done, and a very serious chopper. Realistically, if this one can't chop something, I probably need a chainsaw instead. It's my heavy duty working in the yard indestructo doomsday rebuild civilization khuk.

18 inch Sirupati- Once again, light and skinny enough to carry, formidable for 95% of what you'd ever us a khuk for. Particularly nice for light brush and vegetation. Also the one I'd grab if I ever HAD to bring a knife to a gun fight.

Between these four, I think I've got a perfect khuk for every imaginable use. Matter of fact, I'm kinda frustrated, cause I'd like to buy more, but I just can't justify the darn things. I guess my level of satisfaction is really very surprising to me, considering that they just kinda came my way in trades and stuff, or were impulse buys in DOTD's, not well thought out purchases at all.

Wierd, eh?

That is a nice grouping you have there. The only thing I would add to it is a JKM or a Kumar Karda. Something to be said for a short, stout, straight edged utility knife. I really find the JKM's to be wonderful for everyday use.

I was expecting another doomsday thread, about the 4 perfect weapons ... one pistol, one rifle, one knife, one "miscellaneous" ... what would you choose. And you have to be able to carry them all yourself, and unlike Doom, ammunition is what you can carry too... :D

I can steal the wifes Sarge for that stuff also. But...maybe a Kumar Karda...then I can beat on it and make it as ugly as I want without getting in trouble... :D

No concerns on a doomsday thread. my choices would most likely evolve around which ones would be funnest to play with while watching the mushroom clouds on the horizon. Darn...HI hasn't done a Balisong yet, have they? :D

I think the 18" WWll is the cat's pajamas, but if you want to chop even more, you need an AK of the same size or larger. A 18" AK of 28 oz has more weight forward than the WWll.

Well, you ARE missing a heavy chopper, like one of the 20" AK villagers, or a big Ganga Ram Special.

Second the recommendation of the KK, BTW.

Very good choices, but I would recommend to drop the Sirupati and get a light Gelbu Special. I have never had a Siru that grabbed me (and I've tried 12" - 20"), but I love both my GSs. Add a JKM or Sarge knife (rare of late it seems :( ) to your battery and you are very well equipped.

Aha...you need to try the 25" Siru...it's a gem!

.

Like mPISI, I've never met a sirupati that I really loved.

I think my "ideal four" would now look about like:

1) 16.5" WWII.

2) 16.5" Chiruwa AK

3) 14" BDC

4) 21" Chitlangi

...now I just "need" to get the BDC again! :D

If you like the 18" siru, you'll love the 20". More reach, more power, but not enough extra weight or length to notice. This one has knocked my 16.5" AK out of place as my all-purpose, go-anwhere, do-anything khuk. It chops almost as well and clears brush in another class.

You have a good lineup there. Mine is almost the same - the only difference is that I don't have a WWII and a 20" AK fills the gap instead. (If I need to generate some wood chips, I need to generate some wood chips. Period.)

My 16.5" AK remains on the list even though it doesn't get used anymore. It was my first, it's accomplished amazing things, and it's the one khuk that I'm not afraid to try anything with. It's actually what got me sold on HI in the first place.

My 25" Kobra used to be on the list, but alas, it wasn't getting used for anything more glorious than beer can cutting stunts and it eventually went to a new owner who gives it the respect that it deserves. It was a brush clearing machine, though, and is always ready to cut - something the new owner has discovered already. :)

If only 4 khuks...

Impossible to answer, so a great question for Zen.

Blind answer: BGRS, BAS, Malla, big-khuk-of-your-choice. YCS or 20" AK.

If only one: 15" AK. I've had 2, a USA wood fancy beauty (I gave away) and a lighter, meaner Villager. That one is a keeper. Absolutely a fighter and a tool. Same knife, same length: not even related in character.

M43. Chop, chop, chop
Yup, I agree.:D But then I feel that way about all the mostly fully curved khukuris.
One thing about them, you either love 'em or you don't, simple as that.;)
I also agree that the mostly fully curved khuks cut different than the angled ones and that's what most folks have the problem with.
In my experience the khuks like the M-43, Foxy Folly, YCS, and similar curved shape khuks, cut more accurately than their angled counterparts.
But I also know that that isn't true for everyone, must be something to the way our eyes see differently.

I think most everyone likes their looks better and also agree that the fully curved or mostly so are their idea of what a real khukuri should look like but then that's just my opinion and I'm probably wrong about that too. :p ;) :D

As far as having an ideal four I just don't believe that is possible for me, an ideal four dozen maybe.:footinmou
Even a couple of hundred years ago I still think I would want more than one, or even four; Mayhaps a heavy khuk like a full size Foxy Folly or GRS for the horse or donkey to carry would be an ideal situation to take down and cut the wood for your night fire with the 16-1/2" to 17" Foxy Folly and its tool's too shave fuzz sticks and trip levers with.:D
But if I could have just one y'all know where my heart lays right now. <VBESEG> :D

Once you have the basic battery you need to start getting artistic. Fullers, fancy handles, and then the ultimate were things like the special order of YCSs that was just completed.

The Honda S-2000 V-Tec...... :D ......goes up to 9000 rpm, 1997cc, 177KW / 240 Hp...all this attached to a 6 speed gearbox...0-100km/h in 6.2 and top speed 240...ONLY 4 CYLINDERS and not turbo charged... Iin the last 13 years, honda has made 15 million V-Tec systems...and they have never, NOT ONCE, had a single failure.

My perfect four:
M43, 18" WW2, 14" BDC, YCS. :)
I'll probably swap out the WW2 with a 21" Gelbu or GRS soon.

It's all blasphemy without the AK Bowie... :D

I'd have to agree;) The AK bowie takes the spot of the 16.5" AK in my list of must-haves. It's just as unbreakable. The 16.5" AK (for me) can't chop any better than my 18" WWII. As much as I love the WWII I think it'll have to get bumped off the list for the YCS. The YCS cuts better AND can take the place of the JKM and sarge (love the JKM and sarge, but the YCS kardas kick their little butts;)). I can't go hiking anywhere without my Pen Knife so that is a must have. Finally, I need a big boy to take care of the tough stuff. That duty belongs to the 22" GRS.
So, my list includes:
The AK bowie
YCS
Pen Knife
22" GRS.
Now...if i could just fit my Rose in there somewhere;)

I agree with several of you, and LOVE the looks of the M-43. I thought it would be hands down my favorite khuk, and looked forward to getting one. Now I have two, and they do look fine but the handles are so damned short they're useless to me. What a knife this would have been with a 5" handle!

Maybe it's simply because the handle curves as well and I'm not used to it, or maybe it's the Kami, I don't know. Mine are by Kumar and Amtrak. I have seen a couple from Sher lately, so maybe I'll try one of those. He seems to make slightly more usable handles on average. As for the handle length, Yvsa let me hold his 17" 28 oz. FF with short chandan handle, and it felt great to me, so maybe it's a combination of length and girth. (?)

And as for Runs comments about having to "justify" buying more than 4, you're not thinking correctly my friend! "Justify" and HI stuff don't go together. You buy these because you have no choice. Unless you're going to use that old rent/mortgage/food excuse again! :D
