well folks we all like to talk about the perfect knife heres my opinion im a huge fan of midevel fantasy and my favorite characters are the thief and the assasin now when ya put your mind into their mindset whats the perfect knife
well its not fancy
the perfect thieves knife would be small (easily consealable) silent (not a switch blade or butterfly unless well constructed) and would have the least amount of visible shining surface hence the reason my favorite is either a black teflon coated tac fold or a flat black ceramic tac fold.

There is no such thing as "the perfect knife". That's why we collect them. We trade them, modify them, fondle them, and use most of our carry knives much less than the kitchen knives. If there was a "perfect knife" we wouldn't need blade forums, the blade show, ect. And we would all be most unhappy because there was such a thing. If a unicorn could be found in the zoo, alot of fantasy authors would be SOL. I like the knife world almost the way it is now, just wish it was more leftie friendly!

Hey Nytehunter, spend a little time here. Your idea of the perfect knife will change from month to month. Or week to week.:) Or day to day. :D
A favorite knife? Yea, everybody has one.
A perfect knife? No way.

Later,
Alex

... the next one I intend to buy...
I'll buy the perfect knife tomorrow... yeah that's it!!!

I do not know why a thief would need a knife other than to pry a window or door open. Thieves do not want to come into contact with people (other than robbers and they would want to have the most intimidating knife they possibly could) so to them the knife would be a tool.
Assassins do not usually use knives as they have to get to close to the person they intend to kill when using a knife. A knife is not a very efficient weapon for the purpose of assassination. Guns, poison and bombs tend to do the job much more efficiently. Knives would generally be a last resort.

What I am stating here is not from first hand experience, by the way.

For an assasin: I would'nt know. maybe a WWII style dagger or a short-sword?

For a thief: I guess it depends on what type of thief. For breaking in places a multi-tool would probably be best. But a "cut-purse" thief would need a very sharp one-hand knife like a Calypso jr.
And a "Robin Hood" type thief would probably want a distance weapon.

I once saw a TV show about these kids somewhere in South America...a group of them would run up to someone and slice his clothes to pieces with razors (not really TRYING to hurt the victim, but probably inflicting superficial cuts) and take his wallet and any other cash they could grab. Then they quickly run away leaving the guy in tatters and money-less.

Allen.
