the Persistence vs the Cat

Hi,

I've narrowed down some choices to these two knives as a gift for my brother. He is not a knife kinda guy so there would be no point in getting something more expensive as an small size EDC for him.

So, would one recommend one over the other?

I personally like the choils. Surely the G10 would be more grippy and the 440C should hold a edge somewhat better on the Cat. Is the lock up more reliable on the Cat model?

I'd like some opinions as to what is preferred, but it is the reasons why that interest me here.

The Spyderco Cat is part of my NYC edc rotation, mainly because it's small, inconspicuous, and not threatening in appearance. It's easy to sharpen, performs reasonably well for light tasks, and is inexpensive. In an office environment, it's ideal.

If you want a more utilitarian blade shape in a longer folder then the Persistence will fit the bill better. They're both similar in construction and materials, you can expect about the same performance from either steel.

I would vote Cat. My first Spyderco was the Persistence and I wanted a finger groove choil. I also prefer the wire clip. I do think the Persistence looks better overall though. Both are excellent choices.

It is a small knife so if you need to put some force behind a cut, it can be uncomfortable.

Here is a quick size pic. The Native 5 is the bottom knife.

The persistence is heavier and sturdier feeling. The cat is more comfortable in the hand. 440c should be much more corrosion resistant than 8cr as well.

I don't have a Cat yet but it will be one of my next Spydercos. I have a Persistence and I've been real pleased with it. But I like having a finger choil. And I like the wire clips. If those features are important to you I suggest you buy the Cat first.

While the Persistence remains one of my all-time favorites in terms of shape, the Cat just can't be beat for size and light-weight, if you are looking for a pocket-friendly EDC.

If you want a larger folder, the Persistence gets the nod.

Whichever you choose, have fun researching these two great Spydies!
