Hey there all. I was wondering if anyone had used this particular piece of equiptment? I have seen a few mentions of it in the archive but nothing real specific. How is it used? Kinda nervous about using acid which is why I am thinking of it. How does it compair to acid etches?

Hi:

I use a Personalizer and I like it real well. I bought it several months ago and ordered my stencils and have found it real easy and user friendly.

I have a personalizer plus, it allows you to vary the depth of the etch, which is good when etching damascus or blued blades. The quality of the etch is great and fast.

About the stensils.... is this something that is premade or can I like draw out something and put the picture on the blade? I was going to get something engraved at a store but found out that with stainless steel you cant see the engravment very well. Basicly I am almost reaching over to order one.....

Michael,

I have my stencils made by Marking Methods, and use an etcher I built with components from Radio Shack for about $40. Someone might be able to tell you how to modify a battery charger for even less money.
You can also buy blank stencil roll and imprint them yourself. I've never tried this so I cannot speak on the quality of mark you will get. Marking Methods can use your design or you can choose one of their standard formats.

a exsample of the draw your own stencil is on the tomahawk in the movie the patiot, with martin on the blade for the charactor mel gibson. the hawk was done by tony swanton of (the sword & stone) he has one hell of a shop.

Hey Kaos how about showing or telling us how to make the radio shack etcher. I would be interested in what all is needed. If you have pics that would be good too.

Guys,

I have hand drawn schematics and a parts list that I obtained from another forumite. Not all the part numbers are current, but if you go to Radio Shack you should have no problem getting all the parts you need. I was concerned with the amount of current that it puts out (25V @ 6 Amp), but I have no problems with mine. You could easily substitute a smaller transformer for the 25V one.
Send me an email with your address and I will make copies and mail them to you.

Brett

Ok guys. I got the schematic in the mail the other week that Kaos sent me and am in the process of putting it in some kind of form so I can post it here(it actually is so easy I laughed....kinda imagined somethng more complex). Question.... what is the pad for.... I have never realy seen one of these units so I realy dont understand how they work. There is a "lead" and "pad" lead that exits the system. How does it take a stencil and etches this design on the metal? Do you need chemicals?

Michael

I got my drawings to. Thanks Kaos. Now I am trying to figure out if I can put a potentimeter or some kind of a reastat (sp) in line to make the voltage adjustable. Any ideas would be good???

Michael,

You wrap felt around the handpiece, soak it in electrolyte, and tamp it over the stencil (practice on some end pieces). I get my stencils from Marking Methods. Their URL is www.markingmethods.com . The other lead provides a negative and completes the circuit.

Tony,

Variable voltage is a good idea.

I think it would be a good idea to use a 6V transformer instead of the 25V because the high current tends to burn the stencils easily if you hold it in place too long.
